Elementary 4th grade lesson 6-1
What is up with having to explain why a dog just pissed all over a girls shirt? I mean honestly what does that have to do with English? The whole point of the lesson is supposed to be "is this your........" instead I am thinking how do I explain how to say is this your pissed on shirt? Because you know its the only thing the kids focused on after seeing that....
I mean from the token black guy to dogs pissing on white girls.. classic... |

Must be a bit behind on that lesson.
"Love" the token black guy tho. Michael Jordan jersey, one hoop earring, funky ghetto sunglasses. Surprised they named him Thomas and not Jamal.
Speaking of stereotypes, have you noticed the white boy is short and fat, and the asian kid is the smart one explaining everything to the others. "Oh, this is Songpyeon?" |

Nami's f'd up uneven bang hair cut in the 5th grade book is the best. Even the real human looks like that.
The sixth grade CD, chapter 9 maybe? The listening part was off. A voice was a girl saying "I visited my grandparents in [somewhere]!" but the picture was of a boy. I pointed it out to my students. One of students said matter-of-factly, "Transgender."
Also love the rabbit coming out of the toilet in the 4th grade time unit. |

Next semester you can watch the girl wear blackface in Grade 6 Chapter 1.
Do you have the Korean-edition teachers' guides? Check out the end of each chapter for some wonderful "culture tips."
From 5th grade, Chapter 4:
Quote: |
Western people show exclamation even over trifles. This phenomenon isn't found an oriental culture that appreciates peopel who control their feeling and taciturn. We can usually see Americans who are moved so easily by things that Koreans aren't effected by. This means they are accustomed to expressing feeling freely and frankly.
In Western culture, they start a conversation about the weather when they meet someone for the first time: "It's a lovely day, isn't it?" This is referencd to the inclement weather in England.
The people who live in an area with nice weather like Korea aren't touched by this kind of thing but Englishmen can be impressed. |
Grade 6 Chapter 7:
Quote: |
Perspectives on jobs differ across the countries. There's no sexual discrimination in jobs in America. So we can easily see many women who are bus drivers or fire fighters. Also, women soldiers played a great role in Gulf War. But, it's not so difficult to find sexual discrimination in English vocabulary.
In Korea, people have preferred to have jobs which end with 'sa' such as Ph.D,([bak sa]), a judge([pan sa]), a prosecutor([gum sa]), etc.
However, people's perspectives on jobs have changed with the development of technology and science. Besides, sexual discrimination has disappeared and women choose jobs according to their ability and competence. |

HAHHA i know I especially appreciate the cultural tips. I sometimes read them after the class and chuckle like a madman and my studnets and the korean teachers often think im crazy
I love how Nami has that manly voice. My studnets always laugh their heads off when they hear her speaking. |

Explain that to all the Koreans who were talking about the blue sky today at work! |

Ever noticed that AIDS is brought up way too much? Yesterday I said "Yes, that is my friend from Canada. We are both the same age."
Somehow this girl heard it as "We both have AIDS," as if that's regular... day to day conversation for us. I just heard in my adult freetalking class though that 25% of Americans have AIDS, something I was not aware of. |
