...is somebody I've never met?

You ever feel like this? It's a bit morose and dramatic, but occasionally I think these thoughts. Especially about Bob Dylan, Hermann Hesse, and the guy who is the Mountain Goats band.

edit- apparently, Hermann Hesse has two N's.

Do you ever have dreams of a young buddha sitting around in a hotel room with junkie friends, writing metaphors?

Hehe, if you're trying to remind that Bob Dylan has been a total @sshole since 1966, I'm already aware. Oh, that reminds me, I need to put Van Morrison on that list.

To be honest, I'm basing my knowledge of Hesse on Narcissus and Goldmund, Siddhartha, and the first half of Magister Ludi (that one isn't exactly a page turner but I'm going through it). And really, the bit where it seems like he understands me is from N and G. Especially G. Anyways, I'm no Hesse scholar at all, but I never found him to be self-pitying. What do you mean?

The only Camus I've read is The Stranger, which seems much more morose than anything Hesse ever wrote.

...man, I wish I could approach literary discussions from a position of more knowledge.

the only ones by hesse i've read are Steppenwulf and half of Demian. but i just found his attitude superior so i gave up on him halfway through Demian, he is unquestionably a skillful writer, but for me there is way too much complaining in his books (although he did live in 30s germany so i spose you would have a lot to moan about.....)

i would recommend you read The Fall/La Chute by Camus, The Stranger is the one you read when you are 18, The Fall is the one you read when you are a bit older and you see things going wrong for you. and the other 'major' novel he wrote The Plague is ridiculously good (it's about the french collaborating with the Nazis, but the metaphor for Naziism is an unknown disease.

"i never liked morrissey, and i don't like you"

-the mountain goats

*I actually did meet the mountain goats aka john darnielle. he's what you'd expect, the geeky guy in high school no one talked to.

Isn't Morrissey just the thinking man's version of Rick "Never Gonna Give You Up, Never Gonna Let You Down" Astley?

I find the skill level I see is strongly affected by the translator, as I am unable to read it in the original German.

I love Hesse, particularly Siddhartha and N and G. Knulp is also a favourite.

not at all

i assume you're from north america for some reason, but it is harder to 'get' him if you aren't english because he is very english, but, he wrote some beautiful songs, and he also wrote some incredibly funny songs about being unemployed and bored and thinking you are the shizznitt Very Happy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9vn-Na4_eU

two songs that if you don't love you are dead inside Very Happy

that is true for everything, i did a course on translation (italian to english) and the power that the translator has is scary, you have to work out what each sentence means and then adapt it as best you can

i think that's why japanime is so particular, because you kind of have to make up your own story for half of it
