Yesterday I went to Gangnung and took bus 308 to the driver's license place.
I handed the woman a printout of my eticket for my flight home.

They asked to see my passport.

They brought a box from the back room. It had about 20 or 30 licenses in it. They found mine. I signed the log book.

I now have both a Korean license and a Missouri license.

And if you return you will still have both.

For Americans, we aren't supposed to surrender our license but the Korean DMV misinterprets their regulation. Americans aren't exchanging licenses like Canadians for example. Since our licenses aren't exchangeable, we must take the tests and just like any shmuck off the street. If you exchange your license, like Canadians do, then you surrender your Canadian license.

Cool for you. Before going to the driver's license office, I ordered a duplicate of my US license. US$10, no questions asked.

But really, glad to hear the system worked out for you like it's supposed to. But I just can't be bothered to make that one more stop on my way out of the country.

Where exactly is the drivers licence office? Do you have a web link? I have been meaning to go there since I arrived, but never got round to it!

The tourist information booth told me to take 308 North and she wrote me a note to show the bus driver. It's in the middle of nowhere.

N 37.79568 E 128.81932 is the longitude and latitude of the bus stop for
the building.

강릉 운전면허시험성

Here is the bus stop I walk to from the main bus station:

The way it was explained to me if I don't give them my US license then
I have to take the driving test in addition to the written test.

I'm glad that's an option for you. I won't be going to Missouri where I got
my license and I think the fee would might be around $50 because
it's a CDL.

I checked the Missouri website: http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/drivers/license.htm
It's $45 for a new six year, but only $25 for a duplicate.
You must go in person.
