|
|
A school in Busan (in Hwamyeongdong) wants to interview me that has 25-30 hrs/week of classroom teaching (2:30pm-8:20pm), and then phone teaching to about 12 or 13 students per day after that where you talk to them for 1 or 2 minutes each. They "said" I'd be done no later than 9pm every day.
What's up with this phone teaching thing? Sounds a bit strange. Anyone have any experience with it or advice? Good? Bad? Or should I not even bother with this school. Thanks. |

Stay away from that crapwon. The "phone teaching" is a sales job done to convince parents that "Sarah" and "Harry" are learning Englishee.
It takes A LOT of time to actually do it. Many times no one is home, psycho ajummas hang up on you, numbers are changed, and godknowswhatelsecanhappen and you get stuck doing the crap for a LONG time. |

I was required to do phone teaching once a month, but was paid overtime for it. A little annoying and VERY boring, but not the most horrible thing in the world. What they're asking of you sounds like a rip-off though. |

Stay away from phone teaching...but if you need the job make sure that it is counted as teaching time.
1 hour of phone teaching = 1 hour of classroom time.
When I had to do it, I did it for the hour and if students weren't home...they never got called. Simple. Don't let them scam you into waiting around all hours trying to contact every student. |

Thanks for the info. Sounds like this phone teaching chore is something I want to avoid.
I'll definitely pass on that gig. Thanks for keeping me well informed. |

There was a funny thread on phone teaching here a while ago. Can't remember who penned it, but the basic premise was that it takes a lot longer than most recruiters or directors will tell you. Example, you call a kids house. Mum answers the phone. You spend at least 5 minutes explaining to Mum who you are and what you are doing. Mum then goes to find kid. Kid comes to the phone (if they are even at home) and giggles and makes "uh - uh - uh" noises down the phone at you..... "1 or 2 minutes each" sounds like wishful thinking to me. |

Good story. Pretty funny. I'm sure the "1-2 minutes" per student is a total sales job by the recruiters and hagwon directors. Frustration! Thanks. |

Twelve to thirteen phone lessons per day will lead to unpaid overtime issues. |
