I felt like this a lot in my 20s and teens, but meeting the right woman helps: the free psychotherapy, for example, but the right woman in my life never gave me any psychotherapy and is surprisingly unintellectual. She is, her life, a novel and her being is a book. I suppose that is true of anybody you meet and get to know well.

I suppose that you need to find the flesh version of your Hesse or Morrissey. They are few, but they are out there.

I'm really happy that the flesh version of my Dylan turned out to be a woman or else I would have seriously contemplated switch hitting. Laughing

Just a short jib and then running back to class!

I agree with you, billy. It reminded me of Roberta Flack's song (I read once that it refers to Don McLean, but I don't know for sure):

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
To listen for awhile
And there he was this young boy,
A stranger to my eyes
He was ...

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words

Hesse wrote some great stuff. My favorites are 'Steppenwolf' (I still don't understand why anyone would dust the leaves on a house plant--isn't there ANYTHING a little more important you can do with your time?) and 'Journey to the East' (used to put on my Ravi Shankar records, toke up and read that in an hour and a half). I was never able to finish 'Ludi'.

I think Tom Robbins is great. He can be both funny and profound in the same paragraph.

Dylan is just unmatched, although both Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen are superb as well. For those times I just want to scream, there still isn't anyone as good as Janis Joplin.

Hey! The Mountain Goats guy (John Darnielle) understands ME. I refuse to share him.
