To Geckoman,
What you say about the Queen's power is true. but not for the vast majority of commonwealth members (she isn't even the head of state for most of these countries). Practically every country in the Commonwealth achieved complete independence in the post-war era and for them the commomwealth is only a voluntary organisation meant to promote economic and other interests amongst memebers.
The notable exceptions to this are the 4 former dominion countries: Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In 1931 they achieved constitutional independence from Britain with the Queen remaining head of state. In 1961 South Africa became a Republic and left the commonwealth. It rejoined the commonwealth post 1994 (and the Queen is not the head of state).
For Britain, Canada and NZ the status quo has remained pretty much the same since 1931 with the exception of Canada which passed a law - signed by the Queen - in 1982 (tbc) which removed any of her powers over the Canadian government and people.
Disclaimer: I'm not certain of which laws have been passed in Aus/Nz over this as that is not my area of 'expertise' and all this information is coming from memory. |
