So over the past few months there's been a new term, spliffed, arise on the buy/sell/trade forum here at Dave's. It refers to when someone wants to sell their computer and prices it far to high. Spliff comes buy and rips the post to shreds and explains what a more reasonable price should be.

I've done this as well and so have a couple of others. However I thought that something a little more productive would be to show what you can buy brand new at Yongsan these days. I took one picture of prices offered on pre-fab computers brand new - no monitor, but this always includes basic periferals like mouse, keyboard and basic speakers.

I didn't get a picture of monitor prices but brand new 22"lcd monitors can be had for around 300,000 won.

Hope this helps someone price their second hand pc correctly. Used electronics should probably be priced at 50% or less than the new pricing. (cross posting in the buy/sell/trade forum)

Yeah, some people have some strange ideas what their used stuff is worth. You know, it's like "dude, you're leaving soon. That's what we call a motivated seller. You don't have all the time in the world trying to eek out an extra dime."

i agree with your post, but i don't know where you get the 50% number though. the other FS forums/newsgroups i use, generally consider 20% below the price of new stuff to be reasonable if the used item is in as-new (or very close to it) condition.

but if you're going to price-cop, you should be able to back up your claims. the guy who claims you can get X for $Y then disappears when asked to provide evidence, is as annoying as the guy who asks way too much for what he/she is selling.

since i'm on the soapbox, my other pet peeve is people not being clear whether an item is FS (for sale) or FA (for auction). if you're going to say PM with best offer, be kind enough to put FA in your subject.

50% is based on the age of this technology listed here and I thought I was being generous. This tech is the bottom end of what is available new. If it was newer closer to high end then I would say 70-75% might be possible.

Personally I think for new stuff 65-70% is reasonable if it's less than 6 months old. The stuff in this picture was top end 3 years ago and thus 50% is incredibly generous.

I'm guilty of Spliffing people too, though I don't actually feel guilt. On the one hand it's interfering with someone's "for sale" ad. But shouldn't the guilt be the side of the person who is attempting to profit from the ignorance of others by selling used items for more than new?

I bought a new HP6828 Smartphone/PDA in Kuala Lumpur a few weeks ago for about $650 Singapore (400,000w). The model is about a year old and was sold for more than $1,300 when it came out. I was surprised to find an online used ad yesterday for an HP6828 - "bought a year ago" - selling for $900, 250 more than new ones cost.

Clearly these people try to sell based on what they paid years ago for their tech items, blissfully unaware of what they're actually worth now.

oh, i think we're saying the same thing, just our references are different. how much you paid for an item is meaningless IMO, the only thing that matters is how much that item can be bought for these days. 20% off the *current* price is a reasonable start for a used item in almost new condition. that was my point.

I dunno. I want the warranty, the scratchless mint product, and the giddy feeling when I open the box for the first time. That's worth more to me than 20 percent.

Not to mention the lousy feeling I'd have about using someone's cast off.

Don't think it's people trying to rip others off, just they completely fail to understand the concept of depreciation, which is high for electrical goods

depends on the age of the technology. The computers in the pic above are all brand new, but the tech is 3-4 years old. I wouldn't pay 80% of the prices listed above to buy those second hand.
