A black person living in America post the anti-segregation movement-whilst technically at peace, still under an extremely watchful and often active eye? Free yet still oppressed?
I sure do.
While reading Malcolm X for the second time in my life on the bus to work, I thought man, how did these people put up with this shit?....
I mean it's not as bad as that in Korea but still....my notions of coming here as a modern hippy were crushed multiple times at the beginning of my journey here. One must simply turn to survival instincts to get by.
Sure, smile it off for the first few months, but when that energy and smile fades-one must turn to the darkside and there is no going back....
LMAO it doesn't bother me that much, just could be SO much better here if Koreans stopped being so insecure and realised NO we are not going to take over the country and erode their culture, and no they don't have to compete with us Westerners on every level....You can have your Converse shoes, Dunkin Donuts, Transformer movies it's all good-but please if you welcome whatever you want into your world at least welcome your western visitors and stayers with a little more compassion.
I swear to God the Koreans I see in my country I treat just the same as anyone else and don't even look twice at them...hell I even go to Korean restaurants and treat them even more kindly than I would a fellow citizen.
What am I trying to say here...*beep* I don't know anymore so I'll stop there. Just came up with this analogy today and wanted to get it out....
Can anyone else relate? |

This happens with most countries to varying degrees. Korea is no different. Including many patriotic countries. Get yourself down to the Current events forum then you'll see some American patriots who won't hear a word against it. Swedes are the same, in fact most scandinavian countries, asian countries, australians.
I think countries that can't laugh at themselves are the main culprits. |

Kinda trivializes the whole civil rights movement, doesn't it?
If it really bothers you, OP, go into smug superiority security mode. "Oh Korea, one day you'll get there..." |

Gotta go with Masta Don. It's one thing to b!tch about Koreans (I've sure as hell done it myself) but to compare the EFL set to oppressed blacks?!
I've had my ass kissed here by Korean total strangers for no other reason that I'm a native English speaker w/white skin. |

No, I don't really feel like that. I don't think too many black people had white kids following them around yelling out 'Hieee!' and silly phrases. I don't think that black people drew stares everywhere they went. I don't think white people complimented them on their use of cutlerly or wanted them or hoped they would play with their children. I doubt there's much of a comparison there. |

I bet the black dudes were always getting the poontang back then too. You know, when they weren't being lynched and all that. |

I used LMAO to try and signify my remaining sense of humour....I never try to look at bad situations in life too seriously.....and always try to see the funny side to them....
One of my favourite life quotes is from Couteney Taylor...'If it's good then it's fun and if it's bad then it's funny'.
I mean sure I have one or 2 Korean friends and most people are polite and friendly enough on a very surface level, but I am starting to feel more and more discouraged by the day. |

I've just resisted a strong urge to vomit. It's idiocy like this from self-entitled whack jobs that continually baffles me, as to how someone who (presumably) went to a university can actually buy into their own self-righteous horsecrap of this kind.
Don't attempt to belittle the anti-Apartheid/American civil rights movements with rubbish like this. You do many a great disservice. I hereby nominate this pile of manure as dumbest post of the month. |

Spare the drama, you're not oppressed. Definitely do not compare yourself to black people. You have no idea (nor do I). |

I'm tempted to make a snarky comment but I think Mr. Incognito summed it up nicely. |

I think a better equivalent would be that we are like a group of Asian or Mediterranean immigrants to Australia in the 1970s. |
