Hi, I'm just curious about this. I was an LG Powercom customer for 12 months last year, and tried to extend service for another year. I'm in a different town, but (Korean) customers are allowed to transfer their account to other addresses, and I was told earlier that I'd be able to do the same. A few weeks ago I was told that I wouldn't be able to use LG Powercom anymore b/c they don't give contracts to foreigners. They said it was a recent rule this year---must be, as I and the guy I replaced had LG accounts. I'm curious, has anyone else experienced this? Last year I had to pay an extra fee for only signing a 1-year contract (it worked out to an extra 3,000 a month), whereas they told me Koreans normally sign for 3-year deals. I understand the logic behind it, sort of . . . they're afraid foreigners will skip out on their last bill. It was a hassle, though, as I've been an LG Powercom customer for a year, and an LG Telecom customer for two, and have never missed a bill. My coteacher, who was talking on the phone to set it up with them, said they made some disparaging remarks about foreigners, so take that for what it's worth.

It's not a huge deal now, as I signed up with KT today. Just curious whether anyone else has dealt with this.

What is LG Powercom?

I know some businesses refuse to deal with foreigners because other foreigners have just hopped the country and skipped-out on payment.

I learned, however, that sometimes it's the companies who try to screw people. I had one of those digital dish cable services once, on auto bank account deduction, and they kept charging me after the date I had canceled. so I switched banks. Actually, my Korean friends called them three times before they stopped charging me. I refused to pay for the extra months they kept charging me for, and they refused to remove the charge. The letters kept coming to my mailbox monthly to pay it up. I just ignored them. I have since moved.

That's the excuse, not the reason. If that excuse were true, not a single company in the country would be dealing with Korean citizens. The reason is xenophobia.

If the local LG Powercom shop/clerk gives you the "We can't sell to foreigners unless you get a Korean friend to front for you on the account," you should do two things: (1) Tell them that getting someone to front for you is illegal, and (2) contact the corporate headquarters. When I got given that load of malarkey early this year--in Busan!--I contacted the corporate headquarters after I got an account from one of LG's rivals and the LG HQ folks apologized to me for the racist local, offered to establish service, and then said they understood why I now prefer their competitor. LG did not have a "no foreigners" rule.

From the Korea Times a week ago (regarding LG Telecom):

Quote:
Dear editor,

Last week I tried to buy a second mobile phone with my current carrier, LG Telecom. I was told that LG has a policy whereby Korean nationals can own up to three mobile phones but foreigners can only own one.

This is blatant discrimination and I'm shocked that such a high profile company supports a policy whereby people are discriminated against based on their nationality.

The fact that LG has such a policy sends a message to foreigners that Korean society finds discrimination an acceptable practice.

I live in Jeju Island where we keep hearing the phrase ``Jeju Free International City'' _ shorthand for ``foreigner friendly.'' Policies that discriminate on the basis of nationality are anything but ``foreigner friendly.''

After finding myself the victim of discrimination I was very pleased to note your front-page article in the Sept 29-30 edition of The Korea Times under the headline of ``Discriminators Will Face Legal Action.''

Discrimination is an appalling practice and should not be tolerated in any way, shape or form.

Let's hope the new anti-discrimination bill to be put before parliament in November passes through as quickly as possible.
