I have sat and read through 44 speeches from my students. The speeches are from 3rd graders though 6th graders. I've read some of the things that people on Dave's poke fun at.

*King Sejong made a great scientific language (5th grader)
*The cheering of Red Devils fans made the players better (6th grader)
*That foreigners used to hate kimchi but due to its good taste and nutritional properties, people all over the world want to learn how to make it (5th grader)
*Jeonju hanji paper is the best (4th grader)

But I did read interesting insightful things like

"I have a temper and sometimes it creastes many problems with my friends, but I am trying my best to change it. I thought I was acting like a man but it's not true." (3rd grader)

A student admitted that she is studying English to be able to write questions to American kids about their lifes (3rd grade)

People should be kind to those with disabilities (2 5th graders)

A student's brother was in a coma for 5 weeks after being hit by a car last year. Luckily he recovered and is now in the 1st grade. (5th grader)

In the future, people wll be more sedantary. People will be "attacked by fat and adult diseases." (5th grader)

One student wants to be like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. Not because of money but because they want to be charitable like them (4th grader)

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. I was teaching one of my younger classes about Ghandhi (I teach social studies) in the context of the word "hero", and they were ecstatic.

"Ghandhi was great! He did *this* and *this* and *this*"... and they all wanted to tell me everything they could about how great Ghandhi was because they learned about him in Hakgyo. Of course kids are learning some pretty useful stuff.

You had a 5th grader actually use the word sedentary? I'm more impressed by that than anything else. Otherwise they all sound like normal kids. I'm sure you'd get similar responses by kids their age in any country.

You know what I meant. They're not in Hakgyo learning how to act like little bastards all day, I'm sure in all the studying they do they learn useful things.

was only joking. Actually, some of the essay titles were impressive.

next time you assign essays, impose a ban--nothing on kimchi, paper, or hangeul.

Actually the student wrote something to the effect that "The activity of people will decrease more and more." I don't have the papers in front of me to get the exact wording. I tried to write them word for word but I was in a haze of editing fury Smile

Yeah, I think you are right. That is pretty normal stuff. I just cracked up when I read the ones about how everyone wants to make kimchi and that Korean is the most scientific language. It sounds like something J.A.D would say Laughing

I didn't assign this in the first place. It was dropped on my lap like a rabid raccoon. I just posted since I figure having those essays stew in my brain might cause permanent brain damage...

Edit: Screwed up what I wrote!
