hi,
my contract says 25,000won per extra class hour. i've taught a couple sets of extra classes and both times there have been deductions. 1st one was small (less than 100k) so i was gonna overlook it, 2nd was rather big (for me). anyways, i was told that it's due to kids dropping in the 1st and small class sizes in the 2nd.
i know this is wrong (i'm in a public school, i should probably mention), has anyone had this problem? i honestly just want to know when i take this to the school board (i've already tried talking to the VP), how long will it take for them to contact my school and clear it up?? i'm hoping to plan it right so i'm not around when this stuff is going down.
any ideas?

also, on a side note. i wasn't going to do the 2nd set of extra classes, but it was strange because my teacher came to me before the summer started (i was doing 1 summer camp already), and told me she thought i should do extra classes for a wk too. i said no thanks, she pressed, so i said they're not mandatory (and they aren't). anyways she came back with my contract and pointed out a clause saying "other activities deemed necessary."
does anyone know why she didn't just say, "you're doing another summer camp" and not pay me at all?? after i gave in, i referred to the classes as summer camp, but she was quite adamant about calling them "extra classes"...
sorry for posting twice here!
any replies would be great, thanks again |

That can't be interpreted as "extra classes" that's for sports day or things along that line. |

If you are really at a public school, and not some after school program, then summer camps are not considered extra classes. According to GEPIK though, even if the kids pay for the classes, you are not entitled to anything. The money is supposed to go to the "English fund" aka the "Principals pocket."
Try talking to your co-teacher again and see what she says. You need to find the difference between your assigned classes and these "extra classes." You are obligated to teach 22 classes a week between 8:30 and 4:30 or 9-5. Anything over 22 classes during these times, or classes taught before your starting time and after your finish times are also considered overtime. |

yeah, i'm definitely at a public school 8:30-4:30pm, so it's not an afterschool program. i teach 20 hrs of class, 2 of teacher workshops, so i'm at my 22hrs a week (give or take a class being cancelled, irregularly). i've actually already done unpaid teaching overtime, but i didn't mention it before.
i've talked to my co-teacher and VP once about the extra class deductions, and once to my co-teacher about overtime. they just talk me in circles.
do u think the board will contact the school the next day?? i have a field trip coming on friday, so i wanted to contact the board on thursday, so i could be away... also, is there a limit as to how many summer/winter camps a public school can make u do? because i was a little confused why she didn't just say, "it's another summer camp-- no pay for u"?? i'm not complaining about getting paid, but...just confused about the details here. thanks to everyone who posted so far!! |

There is no limit with the new contract, as long as they keep your time under 20 hours per week during the summer and winter camps. Some people will get lucky and only do a 1 or 2 week camp and get 3-6 weeks of vacation time |

I'm contracted to teach 20 hours. I only teach 17 hours and am supposed to make that up with three extra classes at my main middle school. BUt they can't find anything for me to do in school time. But they have a two hour extra lesson that starts at 4pm and finishes 5:40pm on wednesdays. They pay me extra for this because finishes outside my 5pm finish. No complaints here. They pay this money for every 20 hours taught. SO basically every two and a half months.
I would have taught it anyway because I feel obligated to fill my twenty hours of teaching within my salary, but it doesn't work like that. I'd have had no qualms if they told me to teach it without the extra money, and I told them this, but they insisted. Which benefits me.
I also got paid extra for my summer camp which was for one week. Easy street.
I feel lucky because I know others don't have it like this. |

If you have the GEPIK 2007 contract YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANY MORE THAN YOUR CONTRACTED 22 HOURS A WEEK. NOT A MINUTE MORE. I HAVE HAD THIS CONFIRMED.
IF THEY CONNED YOU WITH A FORGERY OF LAST YEARS CONTRACT - THEN THEY CAN MAKE YOU DO CERTAIN AMMOUNTS OF OVERTIME.
I know one guy who's school used last yrs contract but forged it and pasted Gepik 2007 on to it so they can force him into overtime.
Just for the record, I have turned down - Mother's classes (they would rip me apart to the principal if I was 30 secs late, mispelt a word or didn't like my clothes, way I stand etc, so no F'king way!) - English Cafe - and I refused to go to the gig at Lake park the weekend just passed.
They said it was all mandatory, but I calld their bluff saying that GEPIK explained at the camp this year that we NEVER have to do any work at weekends and do not have to teach over our 22 classes. They realised I knew my stuff and backed down gracefully.
You have to stick up for yourself! I did it at my High School last year whenever they tried to pull dodgy stuff and though you might feel you're making an uneasy situation; don't worry. You're a civil servant and are protected by the labour laws fully and they cannot fire you as long as you DO NOT BREAK THE CONTRACT. They really cannot fire you unless you breach the contract, please remember that, no matter how sh*tty they might get..!
And if you feel any pangs of guilt - realise that they are in the wrong as they are using guilt to manipulate you into doing things you do not have to.

My high school tried to pull the same thing on me when I was asked to do an afterschool class. They said I'd get 25,000 / hour but only if 20 students showed up, and for every student less than 20, 1,000 won would be deducted from the initial 25,000.
I told them I wouldn't do it because regardless how many students show up, I still have to be here. Later the same day, my coteacher came back to me and said that I would get paid the same regardless of how many students came. Good thing too, because only 5 of the 20 who signed up have ever bothered to come!
They said I'd get the money (500,000 won) after the class finishes, so every 20 hours. They get the money from GPOE so don't feel bad about demanding what's yours. It amazes me some of the things my school has tried to pull on me. If I had agreed to everything that's been put to me, life would be a lot harder. |

3. Employee�s regular teaching hours shall not exceed twenty-two (22) hours per week. Employee may be asked to teach extra hours within and/or out of the regular working hours. Extra teaching should not exceed 6 hours per week without Employee�s consent.
4. For the extra class teaching hours aside from the normal 22 hours per week, Employee shall be offered with supplementary class instruction pay at the rate of 20,000won per hour or use it as contribution holiday in which 8 hours� teaching will be considered as one(1) day of which an hour�s teaching equals an hour�s holiday contribution.

Is it guilt? Korean teachers are expected to do a lot more work than us, extra classes, stay at school for the self study for no extra pay. I think it's just they don't realise what sweet contracts we have. In the West we stick to contracts, word for word. Asia has the mentality that the contract is a set of loose guidelines, in China no discussing happens until the contract is signed. We are just not used to that.
I do agree that you need to say no and maybe point to the contract as sometimes they'll try and heap stuff on you, but disagree that they use guilt to get you to do things. |

No. GEPIK said that the contract is everything when we were at the camp. That is how it stands, if you want to make allowances outside it - that's good for you. But you don't have to. Rules and boundaries have been established.
Secondly - Korean teachers get HUGE summer and winter vacations! We get a paltry 10 F'ing days a year paid holiday. Plus they get all kinds of bonuses that we're not eligable for either. Just no one tells us about that side of it.
