I'm thinking of teaching "Senorita" to my HS students after exams, but am a bit worried that it'll be too hard for them. They're pretty low-level (Tech students)...

What do you think? what current pop songs have you used with success? I've already done "My Love" by Westlife and it went over very well.
I use the karafun program which is the best thing since sliced bread. |

I've got tons of YL songs on here, and some pop songs: some .kfn, and some flash proggie style.

I suggest "Lollipop" by Mika (fast, but repetitive) though I used it for an adult class. The 6th graders loved "Upside Down". |

I would say that Amerie is great even if just to highlight a successful Korean American and give inspiration. Take control of me is really repetitive. I have both karaoke on my batcave and a karaoke I made available on my community for those who sign up (because of copyright stuff, must be passworded, so it is only shared with members. Links below. She's cool as hell.

Just don't teach Black Eyed Peas like one of the Korean teachers at my school. There isn't a lot of good grammar or vocab to be learned with such catchy lyrics as
"What you gon' do with all that junk?
All that junk inside that trunk?
I'ma get, get, get, get, you drunk,
Get you love drunk off my hump.
What you gon' do with all that ass?
All that ass inside them jeans?
I'm a make, make, make, make you scream" |

I did I'm Too Sexy as well and it went over very well. Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne also go over quite well. My all-time favourite with my students was Summer Nights. |

I teach elementary school.
The only current song I can think of that I taught was So Yesterday by Hillary Duff. I have the karafun files in my esnips folder...I think. |

My students love the song "Laffy Taffy," but I didn't introduce it to them, I wouldn't b/c it's borderline inappropriate and it sucks.
Why not teach your students music besides "pop" songs, I mean music that matters, has heart and isn't made for the sole purpose of getting money. |

To pique their interest. They hear these songs and are curious to know the words. It's a win win situation. I hate Britney Spears but if it gets my kids interested and teaches them a thing or two I consider it a win.
I have taught some oldies though. The oldest song I've taught (excluding kiddie songs like Old McDonald) is probably Do Wa Ditty Ditty by Manfred Mann. 1964. But it's basically old pop. Catchy and fun and tells a story.... |

Grease.
The only problem is that some of the kids may know the Korean version and start singing along in Korean. |

I personally can't stand Pop, but the students respond really well to it. Even when I taught them the Beatles they weren't very motivated. So every time I teach a Pop song I have to learn it first.
I don't think most of them would be able to appreciate the kind of music you're talking about--that's why Pop songs are so popular, because they appeal to the greatest number of people (or the lowest common denominator, however you want to look at it). |

I've used a couple of songs in the past with elementary kids. They really liked the song by A-Teens "Upside Down"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yi_gmKPazwc
but the song they really, really liked was from the Mary Poppins movie
"Supercalifragilisticexpalidocious"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4b-Z0SSyUcw
They also enjoyed learning how to spell that word
Of course, the OP asked for current songs. I don't even KNOW any current songs, lol, getting old |
