It is NOT a government requirement.

Are they paying for it? If not, just say no and move on.

Just do it. If you have nothing to hide you hide nothing. it's paid time off from work. no big deal doesn't take that much time I had to do it twice they still found nothing wrong.

I got the same information today...

But then I was told that if I didn't do it I'd be fined 100,000 won.

Anybody else hear about this?

I have seen it happen at a hagwon, but nothing resulted of it.

Half of the foreign teachers were taken on a Saturday afternoon for a medical checkup. I was told foreigners have to do this at the 6 month mark.

I think the government requires schools and other employers to submit some of their staff to the test. It must be some employment law technicality.

Anyone know what the deal is?

Is this a requirement? It is in Taiwan and China I believe, a full medical including hiv/syphilis test and a chest xray is required, I know I had to take one, the quickest medical exam of my life no more than 10 minutes max. This was a requirement for foriegners applying for working visas as well as student visas.

I had to get a blood test & chest xray only. No other tests were required. The results were: HIV-, Hepatitis-, TB-. When I asked what blood group am I?, I was told my blood wasn't tested for that.

Apparently a police check is now required, too. I got mine free at the local Jongno Sam Ga Station in Seoul. Just take a passport & ARC card. If you've just arrived in Korea, you may have to pay for a check from your home country. eg Qld Police were charging $60Au, & the Federal Australian police 'all state' check was over $300Au.

Both the medical & police check seem to be a new requirement introduced this year. I didn't require either last year.

Would a check from a doctor in Canada be acceptable? I am having a medical here today. So I also need a recent police check from my local police before coming or is it free in Korea?

As long as the med check tests for Aids, Hepatitis, & TB it should be okay. Don't forget a chest xray, too. A urine test wasn't necessary. Re the police check, it was free in Korea, but I'd already been here 13 months. If you haven't been to Korea before, get the police check done in Canada.

Cool, is this for public schools and uni's or does it include hagwons too? Just wondering if I need to request the documentation before I go.
