I am thinking about buying an SLR in the next couple of months and wondered if anyone had any advice for me. I am thinking about the Nikon D80 with the kit 18 - 70 lens. So if anyone has any feedback for it or any of its competitors I would be very interested.
What I wondered is does anyone know a decent place to buy it? I've been to Technomart/ Yongsan but I am rather blinded by the number of stores and would rather go with a store someone has used.
Thanks for your help and if anyone wants to go and take some pics when I get it that would be great too!!!

thanks for the mention.
daninkorea - you should refer to them as DSLRs ... since an SLR generally refers to a film camera.
the nikon D80 is a great camera ... if you read my 'how to' guide, you'll get a good idea of where to buy and what it will cost.

I bought a D80 with a 18-135mm lens, damn awsome camera!!!
I paid (with a 2GB 'free' SD card) around W1,000,000 about 6 months ago.
You will not be sorry! |

| uhhh, its a sad long story, basically my wife needed mony so I said no problem as long as I can get a D200 later. She agreed. Marriage is a sacrifice sometimes right... LOL!! |

I got the same camera, same lens for nearly the exact same price. I also bought a filter, bag, some other stuff. Good camera, nice lens but seems a little soft sometimes.
I just bought an R72 filter, been having fun with that! |

not knocking the D80 at all boys ... it's a fine camera.
i just happen to have the luxury of dropping enough cash to get the D200!

I have a D40 and it works fine for all my needs.
For most of us, the D40 is a nice, entry level DSLR to get your feet wet without breaking the bank.
On full auto mode it is like a point and shoot camera. You can switch to manual to make full use of it like an SLR camera or experiment and learn.
It is about 1/2 the cost of a D80 - currently about 400k for a D40 kit at yongsan.
If you are already an experienced SLR/DSLR photographer then you will want the D80 or D200 for the wider range of lenses and more pixels.
The D40x is also an option.

I know you are not knocking it... so no worries.
Sounds great about the getting together. I would love to get a camera club going here and meet like on Sunday somewhere.

It all depends on you. How serious are you into photography. The D40(x) is a great camera for someone who wants to take GOOD happy snaps and a little more. If you want to get a bit more serious then go for the D80, and if your budget can afford it then go for a D200 or the new D300. (just released recently) The great thing is that all these cameras take the same lenses.

agreed with tom.
the d40 is a great entry level camera ... and the d40x is the same camera with bigger balls!! LOL this camera is designed for beginners and people new to dslr or slr photography. the menus can actually help you learn the basics, like iso and aperture (there's a visual display of aperture in the camera, so you can see what it looks like - a great learning tool).
the d80 is also a consumer grade camera, but more refinements and more options. if you know your way around a camera, or if you are courageous enough to jump in a little deeper, the d80 is a more performance based camera ... and it's the step before going into the professional range d200/d2x (which is becoming d300/d3 in december).
one important difference is that the d40 has no mechanical focus pin. this means it can only use new lenses. usually not a problem, but if someone gives you an older lens where the focus isn't electronically driven, then you have no choice but to focus manually. the d40 is the only camera that has no focus pin ... it relies on newer electronic focus technologies ... but that's only a minor point, considering most people new to dslr photography are going to buy new lenses.

I recently bought a fuji f50 compact camera. The Fuji cameras are said
to be good in low light and this one has some manual settings, but no
manual focus.
Would an entry level DSLR really be any better? |

It is on my short list along with the Panny FX100 and the Canon SD950.
(I'm also looking at the Coolpix S51 and the Finepix Z100)
