I'm judging by some stuff I've read online, and the fact that there's no dave's forum, that there is a small esl teaching market in The Philippines.
Does anyone have any info or suggestions, or hookups on getting this type of work there?
Any idea of cost of living (renting an apt)?
Thanks,
BT

I heard that they speak English very well there, much like in India, due to English people visiting many years ago.

Living there is fairly cheap comparitively. Depends which area you are in though.

I can't give you exact figures though, but transport, food and accommodation is all reasonably priced.

I was looking into it myself. The teaching/editing jobs don't seem to pay a hell of a lot so you may want to have some sort of qualification that helps you to stand out from locals also applying for the same jobs.

You basically buy your visa depending on the length of your stay-once again not overly expensive.

Try http://www.bestjobs.ph/ there's a tonne of jobs on there.

Went to the Philippines for Chusok and had a great time....can't wait to go back....if you have money there you can have the time of your life and earning what you earn in Korea, you can live like a king/queen there.

Also if you don't want to teach you can buy a small business at a good price and go down that path...

good luck.

might see you there one day :p

The International Schools in Manila and Cebu pay GOOD money! Something like $45,000/year PLUS they give you an apartment! BUT, you gotta be VERY well-qualified to teach in an international school. (They aren't like hogwan-type jobs).

Another big $$ job in the Philippines is anything DIVING-related. Get all your certs and get a storefront to take people out from, and you'd be all setup.

Occassionally I've seen Korean-related hogwan type possibilities, but I don't think they pay so much.

Anyways, there are SOME opportunities, but nothing like the multitude of teaching jobs available in say Korea for example.

There are recruiters in Korea who specifically send students to the Philippines to study. If you make friends with one, they usually have lots of contacts in hagwons in the Philippines. Or you can go to the various overseas study conferences, held in Seoul and Busan every few months and make contact with hagwon owners and recruiters.

Usually the conditions are, about 1 million won or less a month but free meals and housing. This also means you have to live at the school 24/7 and can't have visitors. All of your coworkers will be Filipinos except for one or two Korean managers. You will be the token "native speaker" on campus.

Most Koreans use their time there in the Philippines as a vacation between college and work/military, and spend a lot of time sleeping, shopping, scuba diving, or just generally avoiding class. But since they've already paid in Korea, you don't have to worry about the money coming in.
