BR stands for "Brain Respiration." It is run by a, shall we say, interesting local new religious movement loosely connected to yoga. At one of their franchises here in Busan, one of my friends who'd been there just two months asked them, "Why aren't you deducting for pension?" Their response was to fire him on the spot. When he demanded his diploma back, their excuse for not giving it to him immediately was, "It's at the headquarters in Seoul."

At the beginning of each class, the teachers are required to have the kids do the "Brain Respiration" yoga exercises "to open the brain for learning" and the teachers must do them also. If the teacher doesn't do those exercises, it's grounds for firing.

ok, starting to like the school less now.

the yoga part of it does sound really interesting as i have been doing yoga for years, but the grounds for firing that you put down are very off putting.

must ponder on it some more.

Do a web search for "BR" or "Brain Respiration" and you will find much less flattering descriptions than what I've provided.

FYI: "It's at the headquarters in Seoul" is always a lie here. Franchises in Korea are not like franchises in the US. Here they are actually independent.

And it isn't Yoga as you're used to.

do you mean less flattering descriptions of the school itself, or the general philosophy that they suscribe to??

because if its just the teaching methods, i could probably deal with that. but if its how they treat their staff and the working conditions i'll move on to looking for a different job.

thanks for all the info so far!

Actually, BR does have a headquarters. It's actually in Bundang, no Seoul.

There's nothing to ponder. The school is a cult. Avoid it and move on.

Run a search in the Job Forum for "Respiration" to find other threads.

All of the franchises here have "headquarters." The point is that they are not like the franchise headquarters in the US or other countries. Here they're just the outfit that permits the local places use the name and are contractually obligated to sell franchise brand material to the local places. There is no excuse for the diploma to "be at the headquarters" or for "headquarters accounting department is fixing your pay discrepancy." The local place is basically independent and your pay comes from the local place. Those excuses are just delaying tactics.

Yeah, they lost my diploma, too. When I was fired for not wanting to do the exercises that activate your Dahn-Jon (don't ask), they fired me. When I wanted my diploma back, they claimed it was lost. I have posted many things about this cult of a school. Read my earlier posts and STAY AWAY from that school.

Actually, that's not the case with BR. My first contact with them was through their HQ. I sent my documents to the HQ. People from HQ picked me up. People from HQ trained me. People from HQ changed my work location on me. Someone from HQ brought my docs to me when I needed them. I think the branches are corporate owned and not franchised.

Changed your work location? Nice way to run afoul of the local law. The franchisee hires you; it's the franchisee's name and hagweon address on the contract and related documents for Immigration. At least that's the way it was for my friend and also for the woman who replaced him.

Yet another reason to not trust BR.

That was before my visa was processed. I was hired to work in Busan, but when I arrived they put me in Daegu instead. There was no address on the contract I submitted to the main office (you don't need to tell me, I was a noob).

I'm not defending them. I'm just saying that they do have an actual headquarters. I think the cries of "cult" are a little paranoid. But I'm not going to waste my time arguing over the point.

I never call an outfit cult. In my opinion, it casts a bad shadow on the person using the term.

All of the outfits here (except for independent hagweons), such as EBY, YBM, etc., have actual headquarters. They're just not operating like you would expect a franchiser/franchisee relationship in the West to operate.
