I'm a drummer, so I could never prefer punk to metal. Far too monotonous.
(and yes I'm sure there are exceptions, but exceptions don't make the genre) |

Glad to hear it.
Yes, punk is way too repetitive, good for not being able to actually play an instrument, like most music I guess except for jazz and metal. |

Really? Metal?
Really?
Is your favorite bank Deathklok?
Sorry, just always thought that metal was... Silly. All the hair, and dragons, and elves and whatnot. The Norse descendants painting their faces and killing each other. The STDs. Bret Michaels.
Yeah, there are a lot of ridiculous punk, but some punk is brilliant. How about, instead of the punk bands you chose, we reference Gang of Four or The Clash. Are there any metal bands that can compete with them? |

I will be the first to admit that 95% of metal is crap, but when you take the good stuff and compare it to the best of punk, no competition I'm afraid.
I will elaborate later; I just spliced both my thumbs trying to open a can of sardines with a Swiss Army Knife; I have blood all over the show, no jokes. |

There are a lot of non-mainstream musics that relate to neither metal nor punk.
That said, I'll take punk, if only to remind myself of my middle-school days in the early 80's. |

I suspect those that don't know a great deal about metal don't really have this kind of music in mind when they think of it, but this is some of the music I think of when I think of metal:

The second video is actually a 14 minute song; those first three plus minutes are just the intro. |

Metal -Too many long annoying guitar solo's.
Too much emphasis on the light show takes away from the music.
Satanic lyrics are childish
Don't like the Robert Plant Geddy Lee singing style
Not a single Metal band has done a decent remake of Anarchy in the U.K.
Guns and Roses version of A new Rose is good.
Punk
Steve Jones is a great guitarist.
Like the lyrics better.
There are some great metal influences on Punk example John Lydon loves Alice Cooper. He sang I'm 18 for his audition.
Metal has had a bad influence on some punk bands who have made the crossover
I saw Discharge in the late eighties and they were pretty dreadful
Metallica claims Charged G.B.H. to be an influence
Motorhead claim The Damned to be an influence. |

metal was my first love, but i got more into punk later on. one band i recommend is "The Proletariat." thrash riffs with punk sounding vocals and, as you can tell by the name, punk lyrics. but sort of wire-esque short verses. anyway i dig it the most |

I do really enjoy Punk, but Metal is not only on a superior level of skill, it has lots of synth effects and stuff, which is great if you're into synthesizers and electric guitars (and technology).
There's also a US/UK divide with Punk (the latter being considerably superior) whereas Metal is an international language.

I prefer punk to metal for the simple reason that I can more often hear/understand lyrics without having to resort to the liner notes in a punk song. The later trends in metal for "wailing" into a mic, that throat-rending "devil tone" that makes the lyrics all but incomprehensible is what ruins most modern forms of metal for me. In the 80s it was the hair. Then again, punk has had some terrible fashion icons in its midst. |

I dont like either but I dislike like punk less. Metal is just too funny to take seriously. I would put metal and hip hop in the same "Total crap" category. Why? Because both are not really about the music, they are about gimmicks. Hip hop has its ridiculous bling bling and stupid fashion. Metal is even worse. While I can still sort of understand the appeal of having lots of bling and a half naked *beep* with a big ass in your pimped up ride, for the love of God I could never get the appeal of pretending to be a warrior from a Norse myth. Its just stupid. I would put metal musicians in the same category as trekkies. |

I am leaning more towards the metal side. I do like (most) punk a lot too, though.
Metal does not always have to be about the hair, the cheesy guitar noodling, and the dumb-ass satanic lyrics.
HELMET - heavy, hard, and intelligent.
