You can't hike to the top as it has been closed till 2012(i think) for vegetation regeneration......

Or maybe it opens this year and closes again in 2012....it is a 5 year cycle.

Oh well, 50/50 bet.... Very Happy

i have a korean friend. i'll send him the site.

i googled halla-san. nothing about trail closures right now, although i suppose it wouldnt be out of the question. i do A LOT of hiking, i have never heard of trails closing for five years, and then re-opening. maybe its closed for the season, and will re-open next year. that sounds feasible. besides, its not like korea is known as some major eco-friendly, LNT nation that is so concerned about "re-vegetation"

but, anyways, good-lookin out. it may turn out that you've saved me some airfare. i'll defineitely call tourist info before i go

Interesting. I just googled and saw an old Tour2Korea site that said trails to the peak were closed until February, 2003. The most current Tour2Korea site (updated September, 2005), doesn't say anything about it. If you find out definitive information, please pass it along. It looks like a great hike.

Not at all- I actually just hiked to the peak on Monday. My legs still
hurt...

However, only the Seongpanak course is currently open (on the East side).

I went last February and hiked both the Songpanak Course and Gwaneumsa Course. My Korean friend went at Chuseok and only the Songpanak Course was open because the other courses were damaged in the storms this fall. Only the Songpanak and Gwaneumsam courses go to the summit.
