From the article
Quote:
When
was the last time a deer greeted you at the door when you got home from work? Or curled up next to you and gently nuzzled in to take a nap? Dogs are pets and some help us hunt, you moron. They aren't meant to be killed for sport.

Race aside, this is what I disagreed with. It boils down to society and ideals. It doesn't make him correct.

Yes, people have more pet dogs than deer in the US, but a dog's only goal is not to be a pet. They are used for work, hunting and in other cultures, many other things (bosintang!).

I don't defend the torment and torture of dogs, as in the Vick case, but killing dogs is no worse than killing deer (unless they are already someone's pet).

recenlty the NAACP tried to expose this letter writer as a "bigot" by picketing outside his home.

Do you have evidence to support that claim?

Still waiting for that cite Steve0.

The key words are "interim" and "CEO."

The letter was addressed to a CHAPTER president in Atlanta. Rolling Eyes

So then what does one man's statement have to do with the NAACP? Absolutely nothing. The NAACP does not support his position.

BTW, where's your evidence that the NCAA organized a protest at the letter writer's home?

Do you have gray matter? You fully endorsed a letter that claims white people always hold each other to account. Bush and Cheney are just the most obvious proof this is false. The comparison is 100% valid. In fact, when you are willing to get all hot and bothered about the NAACP supporting Vick but say nothing to the white fools supporting Bush and Cheney, well... you invite criticism of your hypocrisy and outright lies. I see no evidence whites are any more likely to hold their own to account than any other skin color.

People who support Bush are not supporting them with ideas having to do with race. I am not sure I see the connexion. However, it appears that some African Americans were quick to defend Vick when he, in the end, turned out to be guilty. The same happened with O.J. who most people now consider to be guilty. I can understand there were so many innocent black people who were killed in the old days and falsely accused (to kill a mockingbird), but quickly defending someone who looks pretty guilty is not a good strategy. I am not aware of the NAACP's role in that, but I know the African Americans who were quick to defend him looked bad. They are bad as the people who refused to expel the white kids from that Jena school. Prejudice is a serious problem all over America from all the races and both groups have people who have their head in the sand. How many people really pay attention when black youth are suffering in the inner city and when some innocent people get killed in those neighbourhoods. Racism is harming America's peoples in many ways, and we can see this in many ways.

I know you know this because you quoted the letter and must have read the addressee.
And yet, for SOME reason, you've managed to use the heights of your intelligence to title your thread:
Quote:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE NAACP PRESIDENT ABOUT MICHAEL VICK

Well done on using the sarcastic eye roll.

But perhaps it's not the main crux of your point. So, was your complaint that the NAACP had issues with the treatment of Vick, OR that Mr. White, head of the Atlanta chapter said some ridiculously stupid *beep*? If the author had done some research to find out what the official stance of the NAACP was, perhaps the letter would have a little more grounding. Even if that happenned, the self congradulatory tone of the blogger makes him appear like too much of an idiot.

Sweet Black Baby Jebus....If you are going to be a jerk at least get your facts straight. Voodoo = Haiti. Not Jamaica.

That is all.

Alyallen:

The reason you didn't get the chain letter is that it was only sent to dog lovers, not turtle lovers.

Voodoo is limited to Haiti? Think again, sista.

keane:

Yes, I have gray matter--in my hair and my cranium. Yours is evidently limited to the boundaries of the black and white vision with which you see the world ideologically.

The writer of the letter, James Barton, was ridiculing the fact that some black leaders (it's irrelevant whether they are the national president or a chapter president or represent the official response of the organization) resort to cries of victimization (e.g., Michael Vick) regardless of what both common sense and police investigation would dictate.

So, monochrome EFLT, get your vision checked. Shades of gray abound.

Anyone else want to assail the OP rather than address the issue raised in the chain letter?

Actually, you should think again

Obeahism the Jamaican form of Voodoo exists but is seldom heard of. The Obeah man is supposed to marshal evil spirits to bring good or bad fortune. The practice of Obeahism is a still considered a crime punishable by imprisonment here.

In any event, Obeahism isn't the same as voodoo. Not to toot my own horn but I would defer to my own experiences in Jamaica and my relatives more than some silly internet site too busy trying to bolster the numbers of voodoo followers.

Nope! I thought it was hilarious.

I would like to see the link though?

No link--it was a chain letter. But you might be able to access a story if you do a search for the Atlanta Chapter of the NAACP and Michael Vick.

Alyallen:

Why press the point? You can split hairs if you so choose but some Jamaicans engage in voodoo too. A good friend, a parent of a former student of mine, is from Kingston. So I've heard this anecdotally as well.

Sigh Rolling Eyes

There's a big difference between saying that there are Jamaicans who practice it and what you linked to which states
Quote:
Voodoo flourishes in Brazil, Trinidad, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, New Orleans and in private homes in every country in the world.
That's why I'm splitting hairs. There are enough stereotypes for Jamaicans, no need to add one more. But whatever...back to your chain letter...

When will you address the errors in the OP?

First, it's not a letter to the NAACP President. It's a letter to Dr. R L White. The NAACP has nothing to do with his stance on Vick.

Second, you claim that "the NAACP tried to expose this letter writer as a "bigot" by picketing outside his home." Please provide a cite for your claim, or retract it.

I think this has less to do with the chain letter and more to do with the same arguments people have had and will continue to have for years to come.
