i'm pretty sure the k-phones here are made specifically for the k-market. something about a different frequency altogether. i checked that when i first came over, thinking my korean-made cell from canada would work here.

what makes me think it's still in effect is that i was trying to buy a motorola razr at yongsan and they said "do you want korea or USA?" which led me to believe they sell them with 2 different frequencies.

check prices, maybe you could buy one cheaper here than back home and set it up once you arrive.

In a word, no. Korean phones are CDMA, everywhere else (except Japan) is GSM.

that's somewhat wrong.

the US also uses CDMA. but...BUT it depends on the company.

if the phone is with sk telecom, they can roam on the verizon wireless network in the US.

i don't know about using them with other networks though. the frequency thing is right though, korea's CDMA frequency seems to match verizon's CDMA frequency.

i'm not sure what exactly japan uses, my phone has 3G CDMA written on the back, which i'm going to assume is CDMA to the next level.

I never had a phone from Korea that worked in US,
but my US phone (LG on verizon) works great in Korea.

Korean phones with SIM cards are for roaming from a Korean base number.

They do not work with a foreign SIM card.

To be precise;y accurate, my Samsung worldphone does not work with a foreign SIM card.
