Today I got my alumni magazine in the mail. Apparently one of my former classmates has won a $20,000 fellowship. What is he required to do? Go to at least eight different countries over a course of eight months and not study, research, or do academic projects. Repeat: not. What?? $20,000 bucks to travel, with the only requirements being your time abroad and a minimum of countries to visit? Is that not heaven? Is that not the greatest thing ever??

Of course I google-searched it to see how I could get aboard that gravy train. Alas, it is only open to University of Washington students. Oh well...

Nice. It sounds like a long vacation. If it is, then I'd probably spend that $20,000 in 3 months living like a rock star.

Sounds like a dream...I would pick a continent like Africa or Asia and travel by train and bus, leaving the best country for last so I could spent the most amount of time there. Wow...

Whoo hoo, I go to the UW. I actually applied for this once and didn't get it. But I have several more years on my PhD, and may apply again. The only issue is: what to do with the husband? You have to go alone. Sad We have done 3, 4 months apart, but 8 is a lot.

I met an American in Instanbul Turkey who had a scholarship like that to study music. He was given some outrageous sum to just hang around in Turkey, Morocco and Egypt. I think it was something like six months as well.
