Anyone ever been there? I'm thinking about doing a trip somewhere in Feb (yeah I know it will be cold) and would like to visit somewhere unusual.

You could see Dalian. It's a nice little city, but not sure how much you can do there. We were there for a week, but as an escape and shopping.
Or go further north to Harbin for the ice festival...different, interesting, REALLY cold...In fact, Harbin might be your best bet.

We lived/worked in Bayuquan (in Liaoning) for a while. NOTHING there. But there are other places. Shenyang....umm, nothing much. I can't remember the name, but you can go see part pf the Great Wall where it runs into the sea.

North East China is an interesting place...very rural in places, backwards. Quite a few Koreans where we were.

Since you already know it will be cold, why not try to go to Baekdu San (the Chinese call it Chang Bai Shan) on the border between China and North Korea? Of the other places mentioned, Harbin and Dalian are the only ones worth visiting. If you're set on visiting China in February, why not try somewhere either south or central? Sichuan Province has tons of places to visit and great food. Xian has the terra-cotta warriors and other places nearby. Yunnan Province has lots of minority cultures to observe. Northeast China is gonna be brutal during February. Save it for the summer holiday.

Wait, have any of you ever heard about boat rides along the Yalu River near Dandong that allow tourists to get close-up views of the DRPK and its citizens there? I am wondering how close the boats get to the other side. I also heard about someplace in China where tourists can actually be just a few feet away from North Korea, possibly near an ancient temple. Has anyone ever heard of this place, and do you know where it is?
