Not sure if this has been discussed here yet, or how many of you really care, but it's certainly a sad day for MMA fans.
Fedor to M-1?? Fu(k. Looks like we won't get to see Fedor/Couture, Fedor/Big Nog, Fedor/CroCop pt.2, etc...
Apparantly Couture decided to resign for a number of reasons, but the kicker was not being able to fight Fedor.
Just when the UFC was getting so good, this *beep* has to happen.

Wow....I don't follow MMA type stuff but even I know who Randy Couture is. He always seemed like a cool guy who happened to beat people senseless for a living. It's too bad about him leaving. I had no idea he was 44. |

Dana White let the world's two top HW fighters get away in less than a week. |

That's a serious let down! I can't understand why they would give Diego Sanchez and Josh Coshcek so much fight time despite continual losses while benching Crocop after a single loss. Not signing Fedor and letting Couture walk just doesn't suprise me anymore. |

If you read some of the other things written online, I guess Couture left for two reasons - not being able to fight Fedor was just the straw that broke the camels back. He had been thinking about leaving for a long time because he felt he wasn't given the proper level of compensation and respect that he deserved. As the HW champ, most recognizable face, and by far the biggest draw in the US, he was only getting $250,000 a fight. The UFC offered Fedor $2M a fight reportedly. That's not a good way to treat your top guy.
As sad as I am to know both guys won't be fighting in the UFC, I'm actually a little happy to see both Couture and Fedor give a big "fu(k you" to Dana White. The guy is a serious egotistical a$$hole, IMO. |

The UFC has always been notoriously cheap about compensating its fighters.
White also seems to lack diplomatic and negotiating skills - especially when dealing with officials from foreign countries.
A couple days ago, the official death of Japan-based PRIDE - recently acquired by UFC -was also announced (despite White's efforts to keep it afloat...)
On top of that, the projected deal with HBO (also worked on by Dana White) also fell through yesterday.
They're still making tons of money, though, and they've got a lot of options as far as media outlets, etc... |

Well, it's probably for good this time. It's not like he can fight for PRIDE if he wanted to.
Anyway, who are the two fighting for the belt? Has it been decided yet? Gonzaga/Silvia? |

Diego Sanchez is 19-2 (the two losses came in his last two fights, to Koscheck and Fitch) and doesn't have a fight scheduled.
Josh Koscheck is 9-2 (his last loss was to GSP, before that was in 2005 to Drew Fickett) and he doesn't have a fight scheduled.
What continual losses could you possibly be talking about? The ones against guys in the Top 5-10 of their weight class?
Cro Cop has lost two fights in a row, to guys who weren't Top 10 Heavyweights (Gonzaga and Kongo), and didn't even look impressive in his fight against Eddie freakin Sanchez. He was being fed guys to destroy, and he lost two in a row. And now he's in the same boat as Diego and Kos, with no fight scheduled.
I don't see what great injustice there is in that. I like Cro Cop a lot, but he's no victim. He had his cushy debut fight and won. He had a chance at a title shot but lost to Gonzaga. He was spoonfed a striker in Kongo to get back on track and lost again.
As for the Fedor thing, I'm not sure what else Dana White could have done. If the UFC was offering $2 million a fight and Fedor turned it down so he could do his little sambo tournaments, how is that Dana White's fault? If Fedor wants to go fight cans in M-1, let him. If the UFC was offering even half of what was reported, Fedor should have taken it.
Now, Randy's departure is a lot more surprising, because he seemed happy in the UFC, and was pretty heavily involved as an ambassador outside of the octagon. I understand that he wanted the fight with Fedor, but fights with guys like Noguiera, Arlovski, Vera, Cro Cop, etc would still have been interesting. Maybe too interesting for Couture if you catch my drift. He wanted the huge payday that would come with fighting Fedor, and when he saw he wouldnt get it, he decided to stop putting his 44 year old body through hell. Can't fault him for it.
Now, I hope the fighters in UFC start making more money, because they deserve it for what they do. Unfortunately for them, the market doesn't agree, or else they would be getting more money. I can't fault the UFC for wanting to make some money and only paying fighters what they have to.
What I'd like to see happen now, is for the UFC to take the money they would have spent on Fedor and Couture, and bring in all the other HW free agents out there, like Barnett (maybe unlikely due to the history there), Hunt (who may or may not actually be under contract already), and anyone else out there who would make a good fight for Fedor. |
