I went to my brother's army boot camp graduation back in the '90's. They played that, along with video footage of hard-working auto workers, steel workers, happy families, young ppl helping elderly across the street, etc. Songs like that with videos like that get you every time...
Some of you guys mentioned Hurt by Johnny Cash... Must check out on youtube, but since I'm at work, I'm not sure if that's good idea, lest I dissolve into a blubbery, teary mess. |

Yeah,
someone said "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley.
It's amazing! Miles above the Cohen original.
I remember a few years ago, a friend who plays guitar and could put on a very good Buckley voice would perform this once in a while. We were having a campfire on the beach and we coaxed him into it. Well, he started playing and one girl, who didn't realize the signifigance of the song, proceeded to have a loud conversation with someone else. I finally had to yell at her to "shut up" 3 times before she got it. She pretty much ruined a very beautiful moment.
One more is "And the band Played Waltzing Matilda" by The Pogues.
I'm not Australian, but this song about surviving war and living with the pain afterward is just gut wrenching. Gets me every time! |

| Joni Mitchell - "A Case of You." Possibly the best song ever written. |

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley is way up there along with Springsteen's "The River"
maybe I'm old but Roy Orbisons "Crying" is the saddest song ever done, t (and I'm NOT talking about the "duet" with k.d lang) |

One morning in the fourth week of my TEFL course in London, sleep-deprived and hungover as hell, I was walking in a poor black part of town when I heard Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and it reduced me to tears. That's the only time a song's reduced me to tears of sadness, but I can think of a few songs that might reduce me to tears of boredom or frustration.
Many people have mentioned Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt", which is one of the bleakest songs of all time, but his cover of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" is equally bleak. |

Rod Stewart's 'I'd Rather Go Blind' and "Momma, You Been on My Mind'
Bette Midler's 'Hello In There'
Linda Ronstadt's 'Long, Long Time'
Joan Baez's 'Diamonds and Rust'
From teenage years: Ray Peterson's 'Tell Laura I Love Her' and J. Frank What'shisname's 'Last Kiss' (that Pearl Jam thing is an abomination of a great tear-jerker song). On the same theme, but not really a tear-jerker is Sue (corrected as per Rteacher's word up) Thompson's 'Sad Movies (Always Make Me Cry). It just cracks me up when I hear this at some Korean hoff or whatever.

It's good, but I prefer the original version by Leonard Cohen. Now there's a great songwriter. |

ray charles - i can't stop loving you
this song does it to me every time. it's used for the last scene of metropolis, and it's just perfect.
sia - breathe me
this song hits too close to home.
dusty springfield - son of a preacher man
for no reason whatsoever.
kate bush - brazil
from the movie brazil.
roy orbison - cryin'
that voice.
kd lang - hallelujah
i really like her voice on this. seems to be a popular tear-jerking song.
bryan adams - (everything i do) i do it for you
yeah yeah, flame away. first love and all that.

Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
They used a photo on the video for the song of my brother who went missing when he was 15. |
