The Trap: What Happened to Our Dreams of Freedom

I may be behind the times on this one, but if you've not seen this three-part documentary and are at a loose end for three hours, check it out:

http://tv-links.co.uk/listings/9/4677

(The second part wasn't working when I tried it, but it's up on YouTube.)

Adam Curtis is my favorite documentary film maker. All his stuff is absolutely fantastic!

You should also see Century of Self, and The Power of Nightmares.

I really reccomend it to anybody interested in politics, history, and psychology.

His films will blow your mind away and change your entire outlook on the world.

I recomend you read what maker of the Power of Nightmares Jason Burke said in Foreign policy about what Al Qaeda fights for.

It is called Think again Al Qaeda.

A tiny summary wouldn't hurt to add to the thread, would it?

So do you agree with him or disagree?

I've used Burke's arguments on a couple threads on this board (and took some heat for it by some). But I think the man's dead on!

Quote:
The mere mention of al Qaeda conjures images of an efficient terrorist network guided by a powerful criminal mastermind. Yet al Qaeda is more lethal as an ideology than as an organization. Al Qaedaism will continue to attract supporters in the years to comewhether Osama bin Laden is around to lead them or not.

Al Qaeda Is a Global Terrorist Organization

No. It is less an organization than an ideology.

This is why I feel that OBL wasn't directly behind the planning and organization of the 9/11 attacks. Hell I don't even think he knew they were going to come.

This partially explains why he denied three times before eventually taking credit for the attacks?

So who was behind 9/11? I don't know, but my bet is on another radical Islamic group who likely had some relations with bin Ladin, but now direct contact and cooperation.

So why did bin Ladin finally take credit for the 9/11 attacks after deneying it three times?

Simply he saw how his image and organization could be used as a propoganda device to rally radical Islamic support throughout the muslim world.

The first time he did not want Afghanistan invaded so he said so. but he took credit later.

I think Bin Laden says different things at different times but he was behind 9-11 . He said so on an internal tape. That internal tape seems pretty much case closed.

Anyway did you see what he said about the Caliphate. On that part at least Burke is lock and step with the Bush administration.

and that is very important.

The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom is a BBC documentary series by British filmmaker Adam Curtis, well known for other documentaries including The Century of the Self and The Power of Nightmares. It began airing on BBC Two on 11 March, 2007.[1] The series consists of three one-hour programmes which explore the concept and definition of freedom, specifically "how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today's idea of freedom.

Not another documentary by someone from a nation without a bill of rights, where you can ban songs from radio because they have a pro-Irish theme, telling Americans about the freedoms they're on the verge of losing?

I hope not.

Heh heh. It would be interesting to see if this documentary could make it on air on a national station at prime time on a Sunday night in the States...

In fact, it would be interesting to see ANY documentary make it on air that doesn't involve the words 'Top Ten' and 'Most Dangerous'.
