My issue is not necessarily with Immigration for not doing their jobs in the first place (although I do take some issue with it). My peeve is that we must do this again and again and again with the same information they ALREADY have on record. "Here's the info I gave you the last time you asked, so I'm okay again?" "Yes, you're okay (until next year when I will ask you for it again)". Time wasting morons. What the *beep* are computers for if you can't make a note that credentials have been verified and you no longer have do it anymore. Verified means verified. |

It's a huge make busy work spectacle...
One of the most wired countries on the planet and they can't freaking put all this info on a database and be done with it. |

Final chapter: Well, I am going to get yet another set of sealed transcripts. Apparently this is the only thing that will suffice. But have handed in my resignation. However I won't leave under a cloud of suspicion. I gave them the required amount of time because even if they refuse to be honorable and decent and fair. I am.
You can take my job and steal my money but no one can steal my honor or integrity. They will have my transcripts in about 4 weeks maybe less. And they will have to find another English teacher. Not that it is that difficult. But it will be hard adjustment as I have been at the school for six years and I am the only native teacher they have ever had in that school.
I am a GOOD teacher. I make sure my lessons are interesting and valuable. My camps are very popular and we normally have to turn kids away. The students I coached have won speech contests. I teach a Club Activity class. I seasonally decorate my classroom. When I leave I will take every poster that I bought with my own money and have a giant rummage sale for the local teachers.
They will have a yet another copy of sealed transcripts and no teacher. They made their choice and I made mine.
Glad it is over. Perhaps I am just stubborn but after slogging through this for six years actually 7. One year was at a hogwan (good one) I am tired of it tired of the constant undercurrent of distrust and resentment. So maybe it's good for them. They can get a newbie that they can mold to how they wish.
My only regret is leaving my students. I love them to pieces. They are bright curious, horrible some days, so sweet the next, funny, precocious and the reason I do this. But I am done in the land of morning calm.
I have been spat on, sworn at, had people for no reason scream at me "f'ing U.S.A. (not in my town) Had to fight for everything. Every contract re-signing was always painful but money is never an easy thing to talk about. I went a few years without a raise. I seriously love teaching. I wish I had know this years ago. I would have made it my 1st career not my third. But it will be my last. Just not here.

Don't see what the big deal is Jades...they're just doing their jobs. They were asked by their masters to scrutinize all degrees and that's what they've done. I think you're being a little melodramatic here to say the least. Sure it's a hassle for everybody involved (K-folk as well) but, everyone is getting it done. For some it's more involved than others, granted....just one of those exasperating bits about life...get over it!

The consulate in Toronto has changed their rules regarding this... they require you get the degree notarized by a notary or lawyer FIRST, then you must provide sealed transcripts to them as well before they will put their stamp of approval on your credentials. |

It would have made more sense if they had told me this when I called them. Instead, they dropped this on me after a 2-hour bus ride and appearing in-person. My flight out was a couple days off, so it's not like I could make another round trip to get it done AND make a side trip to my uni to get the transcripts. |

If I wanted to be melodramatic I would be saying "the Nazis were just doing their job" or the "Blackwater contractors in Iraq were just doing their jobs".
I am my own master. I try very hard to respect the culture business and other wise of the country I am living in. But I have my limits too as I am sure you do or don't for all I know.
I was grilled like Japanese war criminal because I attended 2 universities. I was asked to provide a letter from my university I did. I gave them my alumni card, I did. The principal decided that I must get new transcripts and demanded I bring in my "original degree".
I have taught at this school for 6 years. No one bothered to keep the transcripts (original) I turned in the first time??  3 years ago like all the other native speakers I was required to go to immigration and be "verified".
No one at my school last week could find a CV, copy of my degree or my transcripts. All of which I have provided more than once. In fact no less than 4 times.
You know I think if they told YOU to wear a big ol' pin with FT on it you would cuz gee that's just a little inconvenience. Or maybe you wouldn't mind registering your where abouts and perhaps checking in every month like a parolee. I mean it is their country and you should do whatever they say right?
Well guess I was raised different. I do respect this culture I am married to a Korean but I have my line in the sand and while I am going to get them everything they have asked for I refuse to continue working in place that treats foreigners with such hubris and disrespect. I did everything they asked me to do and because I had the bad judgement to have 2 degrees from 2 different school and because THEY didn't bother to keep any records I am suddenly suspect AFTER 6 YEARS AT THE SAME SCHOOL.
You know what they say...If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.
Me and melodramatic self will continue to teach because I love it. I will be heartbroken to leave my students. But unlike you I have some backbone and this hoop was just one too many. Again AFTER 6 YEARS AT THE SAME SCHOOL.
Good luck to you. I am sure you will keep your head down and do as the Masters tell you. Me I am my own master. I have a new job lined up and will be leaving the land of the morning calm in 2 months.

I have not been asked as of yet for anything-I iwll show my Ontario College of Teachers ID registration and tat will be it.
Homer, yesterday I was in line waiting to purchase a ticket for the bus. There was 2 kiosks, and it was not busy-a 45+ woman was 2nd in line to the left of me-what with her being apresumptuos Korean old bag she though she would scott in front of me in line-I held out my left elbow high and she got the point-too bad she didn't becasue my elbow ould have slammeed her right in her ugly grill if it came to that.
Homer, who is thinkin gof the 45+ years old Korean children? It's for their own good, whether it's that or a Korean dude trying to shoave past me on my left when I'm right beside a wll-he didn't make it. |
