|
|
OK, I'm getting ready to apply for Korea jobs, and hope to leave fairly soon (however long it takes the VISA, it doesn't seem like it takes long to get job offers).
If you would review my thinking it would be great:
I've decided on the general Seoul area due to it's proximity to Incheon, and general "things to do" spirit. I've done some research on the various subdivisions. Location-wise, it seems like anything in Bundang, Ilsan, Sanbon, Suwon, or Hongdae would be ideal.
I've researched recruiters too, it seems like the ones I should contact are: ESL Planet, Duff Recruiting, and Korvia.
I'd prefer a public school job, but I haven't had much luck finding offers in the Seoul area, even after speaking with a few other recruiters. Probably because this isn't the time of year they are hiring?
So if I go private, I'll just contact the above 3 recruiters and try to decide on the best bet.
This all sound reasonable?
One question too...do any of the other largest cities in Seoul tend to pay better? Just wondering, as there seems to be a pay premium for going rural.
Thanks, |

I hear that Bundang is roughly an hour and twenty minutes from central Seoul, but a nice place to live anyway.
I would say that Hongdae is more centrally located.
Here is a subway map to give you an idea:

Click on the map to make it bigger. Look at the yellow line on the bottom right of the map. Bundang is a couple of stops beyond the last stop you see on the map....
Try FOOTPRINTS recruiters, have never used them myself but they have a good reputation and recruit for public schools. |

Talk to people either working there now, or have already finished their contracts, preferably both. Be suspicious if the prospective employer balks at this. Presumably you gave references, and since you are taking a risk by traveling so far from friends family and other support structures, it is fair for his to provide references for you. Try to get them to talk to you at thier home, away from the office, so that if candidness is called for, they will feel free to be so. |

I'm curious as to why you want to be near Incheon. Perhaps you are thinking of ITAEWON? Itaewon is where lots of foreigners (teachers) like to go bar hopping, dancing, etc...you can see it right on the center of the map on the brown line, #6. |

Footprints is lame. They give you the run around every time. Here's what they do, basically. They'll send you an email every couple of weeks saying they have this GREAT opportunity, so you better hurry!!
But, as soon as you apply, the job isn't available anymore. That has happened with Footprints more times than I can count. |

Great, I didn't know that about Itaweon. I did mean Incheon though, as I'd like to be close to the int. airport as I have a few friends who will probably be visiting me, and it'd be nice for later taking a short trip or two out of the country. |

There are airport buses all over Gyeonggi-do. Oddly, now that I live farther from Seoul, the faster I can get there.
I don't know where you're from, but this country is only about half the size of my home state. Don't worry too much about getting to the airport. I think the vast majority of us travel out of the country without TOO much of a hassle. And especially for only a "trip or two," it's not worth it to worry really. |

Fixed it for you. You can get a shuttle bus from almost any city to the airport. |

Just put your brain in neutral and let Korea drive it for a while. |

Say what? I live in Bundang, Seohyun station and it is a 30 minute bus ride to most places in Central Seoul.
Yongin is the place beyond the last stops on the yellow line.
To the OP:
Seoul is a city in and of itself. It is the capital of South Korea. There are no other cities within Seoul. There are -gu's (districts) and -dong's (neighborhoods).
Why are you worried about proximity to Incheon?
Some of the places you listed are cities and some are dongs/gu's within cities.
-Hongdae is a dong within Seoul.
-Bundang is a gu or a dong (depending on where you are) and is in the city of Seongnam.
-Suwon is the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do (province).
You should take some time to look at a map, read the FAQs and cruise through the contract threat before you jump on the first offer and sign away a year of your life in hakwon hell. |

Truer words have never been written.
To the OP - from your post, it is evident you have not done much (if any) research. |

This is why you send a copy of your degree. If they back out you can
apply somewhere else. |

Did you intend to put a "DON'T" in this sentence? |

Thanks. I haven't lived outside of Seoul or Gyeonggi-do and don't know of a centralized "how to get to and from the airport" website, so I was erring on the side of caution. |

I don't think so... how would someone get a job if they didn't at least send a copy? |
