I heard on here awhile back some new casinos had opened up.
Are any of them close to Seoul station? If so, please give me some directions by cab from there. (Coming from Daegu, so rather not have to bother with the subway if I don't have to.)
Also, I have a few years of rust on my poker game, so if you could tell me a place that I wouldn't potentially get eaten alive by sharks that would great. |

There is a casino near Namdaemun, but I don't know exactly where.
Try the one in COEX.

coex doesn't have poker, but walker hill does and depending on the day, there might be one table or a few open. there are tournaments on wednesday and two other days, but they're dependant on how many people show up.
cabbies know where walker hill is. don't know where you're from so i can't say how much. last time i went, the cabbie got lost and we paid about 5k after arguing with him. |

It's far from Seoul Station. It will be a hefty taxi ride.
Take the subway to 광나루 (Gwangnaru) station. It's on the purple line, in East Seoul.

There is a 7 Luck casino at Seoul Station, about 5 minutes walk up the hill at the Millenium Hilton. Go out exit number 8, walk up the hill about 20m, turn right into a parking lot and go up the stairs at the back of the lot. At the top of the stairs, there is a big church, and a foot path that leads to the back entrance of the Hilton. Conversely you could take a taxi and let him take on a bit of a tour before he drops ya off....should be around 2000-3000.
There's no Hold 'Em there, but they have all the other regular games, including 3 card poker and Caribbean Stud. Its quite small, but generally not too crowded. |

My only problem with Walker Hill is that they advertise a $1-$2 table, but when you get there, it's almost never open, and you have to play the $2-$5 table. You are paying 30-60 dollars to see any flop, so you even have to think twice about playing AJ suited.
Half the table are people who think nothing of losing a huge pot, cause they just take out a Million won check and cash in again. I've seen guys call $50 pre-flop with 10-9 or J-4 just cause they can.
If you play real tight, you WILL make money, but be prepared to lose big sometimes to very unreasonable hands that will have you pulling your hair out. Bring at least 600,000 won and be prepared to lose it. If at any stage you have less than 300K at the table, cash back in for more.
Lastly, when I have been there, at least one player was a guy with a vested interest. i.e he had some kind of business arrangement with Walker Hill. He made no secret of it. But he would straddle the big blind every time, and bet when he had nothing, which made me think, he was happy as long as the casino were getting their rake.
Free food and drinks with table service is nice.
Be prepared to chop as big blind sometimes, or always.
I once saw a pot with 2.8 million in there, and I've only been 3 times. There have probably been much bigger.

Yea, true about the 1/2 table. There is one, but is almost never going. Theres always a 2/5 game, sometimes a 5/10, 10/20. Action is pretty good on the weekends only. Weekdays, actions starts up late usually around 8 or 9 PM. Rake is assinine. I wasn't sure, but I think it was like 10 percent of the pot, or something like that. Didn't pay too much attention, too busy losing money.
The guy you are mentioning, I think is one of the people who proposed poker at the walker hill. I hear he was a card shark in the underground poker clubs, that now goes legit. Just what I heard, not too sure.
If your looking for legal poker, this is the only place in Korea you'll find it. Pretty loose players, I thought. THe regulars usually chew up the tourists. Just stay out of their way, and you should be okay.
It's an alright room. Nothing like the poker rooms in the US, but it's worth a shot. Remember, the poker boom hasn't hit Korea yet. |

Really good assessment there.
I was going to the Tourneys quite a bit. A lot of those regular players would quickly move on to the cash games. Some seemed to want to get knocked out of the tourney so they COULD move over to the cash games.
They just take advantage of the 'fish', and most of them just throw out money at absolutely everything to get the fish off hands, or get them to go all in just to play a hand.
A real good player I know (who isn't part of the 'know'), he stopped playing there altogether. He believes that too many are 'in the know' on something and work together to take other's money who play.
I'm all into the tourneys (can't lose much there), but I'd avoid the cash games over there at all costs (which could end up costing you a lot!). It's not the players are amazing, it's just that there is a feeling that something isn't quite right there.
I sat in on the cash games once for 90 minutes. I only played two hands, lost my blinds everytime (they try to steal them anyways). First one I got on, I lost half my stack on a really good hand. It was nearly an hour before I had another hand I was confident enough that hand high winning potential, and I was able to triple up, and just left immediately after that win.
Granted I wouldn't be able to know it that well from that limited exposure cash game wise, but having been to 30+ tourneys with the cash games right there, you can see the regular pattern. Anyone I ever knew who casually played the tourneys, lost, and moved over to cash games, usually quickly lost whatever they put into it (100,000 won is minimum to start at the table). |
