Definitely more of a punk fan myself. I never understood the appeal of metal.
I think metal has a couple things going for it. Such as solid strong structure (there have been some great instrumentals in metal) as well as some truly talented vocalists. Punk rock veers away from great instrumentals into a "keep it simple" three-chord philosophy. Which doesn't mean it is in anyway inferior to metal, as there is nothing wrong with simplicity and there are real artists in both genres.
However, substance is something which I've always found metal to be lacking and punk to be exceeding in. Metal is (generally) about darkness, depression, or fantastical evil things, like demons, warlocks, witches, et cetera. Metal doesn't tackle social / political issues in the way punk rock does, and most of the metal I've heard has very little to say about anything real. Not to say that good music needs a message, but it does help. In my opinion.
Also, to compare fan bases, I'd rather hang around a bunch of punks than metalheads any day. Punks (at least the ones that I knew back when I was young enough to take it seriously) are more fun-loving, happy-go-lucky people. Metal heads are commonly fat, High Schoolish underachievers who like to wear black and walk around staring at their feet all day with a discman on. I guess you could call that goth, but goth *is* a subgenre of heavy metal / dark rock music, so you can't pitch one without implying the other.
Punk is also a far more energetic and optimistic form of music, plus it actually has a positive message most of the time. Its about self-empowerment, taking whats yours and not letting anyone else run your life. Thats of course, talking about traditional punk rock. But punk subgenres have a lot of different insights too (disregarding pop-punk of course): such the grunge movement, which took the same ferocity of old school punk rock and made it introspective, as well as various genre bending post-punk albums which take the energy and move it elsewhere. Modern subgenres of punk rock are far more musically diverse, too. Listen to Nirvana or the Pumpkins and try and tell me that punk (grunge) is only ever three chords.
I don't find heavy metal nearly as interesting. It never really did move away from the black, dark, D&D crap, even in its most recent incarnations. Metal doesn't have nearly as much going for it historically either. Who can forget the Sex Pistols (Anarchy in the UK), The Ramones or any of the other pivotal old school bands? What does metal have, Iron Maiden? Metallica? Sheesh, give me punk over that any day of the week.
My most unpleasant memory of a metal head was an argument I got into once where they were saying that anyone who didn't like Metallica or Iron Maiden had no taste in music. Could you imagine how annoying that was? Especially when I think both bands are overrated.
Anyway, metal has raw talent going for it but punk has talent plus a message, plus a more likeable fan base. The most a metal head could ever ascribe to is moving out of their parent`s basement and opening a comic book store. |

The remaining 5% is gold.

| I would go for post-punk like The Fall, Gang of Four, Devo, Pere Ubu, Wire, Mission of Burma and Joy Division. I used to love metal but now I have drifted more into the punk area. However, nothing beats jangly pop ^^ |

| I'll take punk...but really? neither. I'll REALLY take hiphop, house and trance...with some pop thrown in to the mix. |

Says the guy that listens to modern hip-hop! Wad is up yo?
I like all genres, and I like punk, but let's face it, metal has the most diversity. Yes, most of it is cheesy and lame, but you cannot find any other genre of music with so much to offer.
If I want absolute raw music that is more raw than any punk, I'll listen to Darkthrone.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-tVKRs4kfqc
If I want symphonic, orchestral music, I'll listen to Therion or Arcturus.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=d6h84W8qz0I
If I want folk music, I will listen to Skyclad or Finntroll.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=uFQet75TXMg
If I want to give jazz a spin, I will listen to Atheist or Cynic.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sNWhqyaLOJk
If I want funky catchy tunes, then early Celtic Frost it is.
If I want fun, hoppity hop tunes, then Possesed will be played.
If I want an all-out technical assault on the senses, then Emperor.

Goth? Atrocity.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_lv8kYipQjM
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jAkR1uiFWl8
Trippy stuff? Tiamat.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ki-niyEwU7s
Or even better, Cathedral.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0bU7tf83mBM
Viking stuff? Bathory or Einherjer.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hDpc-831GPs
Or just kick-ass 80's stuff (for all the idiots that brought up hair bands as being metal).
Dark Angel. Better than Slayer.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0kgorpAvXAE
I haven't even started on the good thrash and black metal stuff. This is but the tip of the old iceberg.
I know more about metal than anyone on this board. Trust me.
'Nuff said. |

I think punk has more range and variety.
On the other side, you've got heavy, heavier, and super-heavy.
Where does Placebo fit into this?
Rage Against the Machine? |

Hard rock? So-called 'alternative'?
Definitely not metal or punk. |
