Encountered some seriously dodgy recruiters recently moreso then the regular switching jobs or even "running out" of them.
Thought I'd post them on some black list or grey list, however when I searched for them there doesn't seem to be any that were up to date or even there. Most just don't exist anymore.
I know many if not most recruiters in Korea have issues but it would be beneficial to read stories behind the complaints which may be helpful to others. And like these forums have moderators to sift out the less than helpful stories which are relatively innocuous or perhaps suspicious in nature. Whatever the case, there really should be a good one out there.

I'm interested in finding a decent black list as well. I'm currently searching for a job, but I have no idea which recruiters/schools are decent and which are the shady employers that I often hear about.
If there aren't any decent black lists out there, and please pardon me for the off-topic questions, is there any way to know beforehand whether a recruiter/employer is decent or not? Like, are there any questions to ask that could reveal their attitudes and practices as an employer? And how do you ensure that your living environment is decent? And, is it possible to leave a job even under a contract if the living/working conditions are really terrible? |

Just do a basic google search...people have blogs and stuff. Also, search on here. This seems to be the place these days for people to b###ch abou their crappy schools. |

"Good blacklist" is an oxymoron.
The only way they'd be good is if they allowed rebuttals and multiple inputs on a school before blacklisting them. I'd be willing to bet at least 95% don't, and those that do probably aren't that comprehensive b/c no one is willing to put that much work into maintaining it.
Plus, schools change over time. One bad incident 3 years ago doesn't mean the school sucks now.

You just defined the oxymoron.
Like I said forums like these have the right idea. Comments are listed by dates and other commentary is allowed. Comments can be moderated to keep out vulgar language and maintain some decorum.
Any volunteers? If not I guess we could start a thread on Dave's. |

Same here. I'm probably looking at a hogwon job at the end of this month, and need some kind of reliable information source.
And yes, I too am convinced that all recruiters suck at least a little. |

Had a bad experience with Korvia.
The members there used to be part of Worknplay. My recruiter was Ann. It was really brutal since I had known her for a while and trusted her. She had handled a previous placement for me and seemed like a pretty decent person.
However with the next job she shocked the hell out of me. She made me think she was acting on my behalf but in reality she was not.
I was having a dispute with my school who didn't allow me to speak to other teachers in Korean therefore would be isolated from them. I wasn't interested knowing I'd be miserable so I contacted Ann. There was a big brooha about it and we had a meeting with the administration.
I was under the impression she was there at my request but I had overheard her speaking to the co-teacher who made the complaint and turned out Ann was actually working for the school. She conveniently hid that fact from me.
And during the meeting she ganged up on me with the administration and the co-teacher and made me sign an ammendment to the contract.
I ended up quitting the school and cutting ties with her. Best decision I made since I've been here.
Lesson: Don't trust them. Ask as questions as you can and don't be surprised if things go crap. |
