Would an entry level DSLR really be any better?

You cant even imagine. ESPECIALLY in low light. You could be shooting with an f/1.4 lens and have the iso at 400, which on a DSLR would give you very little noise as opposed to needing to push the iso high in your little cam and still not getting the speed of the DSLR or even coming close

I don't know if this is divering the thread or not, but

I have a Coolpix S5 (wife had it before we married), and I love it.
Problem is that sometimes when you take a picture with flash, in a low light environment, the picture can be very dark.

The only way round this I know is to switch the flash off, but then you have to hold the camera very still, or you get a rubbish photo.

Any advice guys?

Again apologies for diverting the thread, but many experts here, I couldn't resist it.

Rather than post on the thread, could anybody pm me instead?

I looked up the S5 on the internet and it says you don't have exposure compensation.

Try a tripod. I have a small aluminum one that stands about four feet tall. With my Kodak I would sometimes just leave it attached while doing a hand held shot. The weight and the pendulum effect reminded me of a small steadycam I got to try once. (Unfortunately the mounting shoe was lost with my Kodak in China. I brought the tripod home and realized I
probably won't find a new mount for less than a new tripod.)

I think I will definitely go to the store you recommended Dave, probably next time I get paid and get the D80.

I've been reading around the lenses I can get with it and am trying to decide between the 18 - 135 or the 18 - 55, and then getting the 18 - 200 VR in a month or two. Anyone have any hands on experience of the 18 - 200 VR?? I know its expensive but I've read a lot of really good reviews (plus I love buying shiny new electronic equipment!!)

A couple of hundred bucks cheaper??

I just checked some costs online and it is just under 700,000 on Danawa ($760) and $750 on www.ritzcamera.com

Either way it makes no difference to me. I'm a brit and it costs about $900 there!!

Yes, for me at the time, some lenses were cheaper in the states.

For example, I bought a Sigma 170-500mm lens that costs here in Korea almost a million won, in the states its just $650.

Not all stuff is much cheaper but in general it is.

Yongsan is not a friendly place, especially for foreigners. Check the prices on Danawa before you go there and MENTION the word 'Danawa' to the salesman several times. You gotta let him know you came prepared. Also, take out the camera from the box and check it throughly before actually giving him the money. (Sometimes they sell used items as new. Surprise.) Also, check for the 정품 sticker. It's usually gold. No wonder the place is called 'Yongsan Dungeon' by Koreans.

Why don't you give Pentax K10D or Samsung GX-10 (same model) a look as well? For the money, this camera offers tons of features; Anti-Shake, Dust-Removal, Weather-proof, and etc. FYI, I don't own either Nikon or Pentax cameras. (I'm a Fuji fan.)

I had an experiance when I bought my D80, they tried to sell me a D80 that was used, you can tell by looking at the mirror and the CMOS sensor.
The one they gave me first had some dust and grime on it like it had been standing exposed. Be careful when you buy a DLSR.

I guess they think us dumb foreigners will never check. Rolling Eyes

When I bought my EOS 450d the shop had 15 boxes on display; he offered me one and i said no and insisted on a random box. this way I knew he wasn't landing me with the display/demonstration model.

op

not sure if you have any prior dslr experience. if you want to go nikon, go cheap, get the d40 and an 18-200mm super-zoom second hand (they have the sigma in a lot of places second hand.

this way you've only spent a modest amount of money, but can take great photos and decide later if you want to upgrade the body. photography is more about the glass than the body imo.

my camera guide is mentioned on the first page of this thread.

i strongly advise against going to yongsan. you're going to get ripped off unless you know exactly what you're doing.

some good deals can be had at namdaemun and in technomart. both places are much more ethical.

if you've never been camera shopping before, take a friend with you. and don't buy in the first shop ... go to a couple of shops and compare products and prices.

good luck.

My mom has a D80 and I think a D300? (the newish one) and she loves both of them. She still takes the D80 with her as a backup camera and uses it a lot even when she has the D300.

I am pretty sure superdave shops at YesDica, and that's also where I have been shopping for the past 3.5 years. I have spent close to 3 million won there. The guy is a rude though. The only reason I keep on shopping there is because he always has the cheapest price, however, after my last experience with a friend, I am going to try to find another place that will come close to his price.
