They are doing a big test today at 2pm. Anyone else hear it? I think it's all over Seoul.
I just realized that I wouldn't be able to tell if it were a test or real if the actual thing happened. |

I heard it.
My Korean friend last year said that if it's a test, the sound will get louder and quieter, whereas if it is real, it will be constantly high pitched, and won't waver. |

On CNN it says Uijeongbu just got bombed by some Ilyushin Il-28's. Might wanna round up your documents and cash and go deep underground. |

Who's getting round 2 of the sirens now?
I guess they just changed the batteries. |

Quote: |
On the 15th of every month the Korean government holds civil defense drills. At 1400 hours the air raid sirens are sounded and everyone in South Korea must get off the streets and into the nearest building. As soon as you hear the sirens, go inside, whether you are walking, riding a bicycle, or driving a military or civilian vehicle. About 20 minutes later, the "all clear" is sounded and everyone can resume their outside activities. Comply with the regulation! If the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the civil defense drill is held on the nearest weekday. |
From the New Zealand Embassy:
Quote: |
There are two types of emergency sirens:
- 1 minute flat siren (advance warning of enemy attack)
- 3 minute modulating siren (enemy attack is imminent or underway)
Sirens are tested and drills held on a regular basis.
When you hear an attack warning, move quickly to bunkers or basements, taking basic emergency supplies and CBW (chemical and biological warfare) protection - see details below. Motorists should pull over on the right and seek shelter. After seeking shelter, follow advice from government broadcasts. |

Yup, I'm at my hagwon here in Pyeonchon and I can hear it right now. No one else seems to notice/care, but I've been hearing it steadily for around thirty minutes or so.

I'm about an hour from Busan and I'm hearing it now. Also heard a fighter jet pass over. |

Yeah, it's a test they usually do them around the 15th of the month.
I made a video for Youtube about it a while back. You can check it out here if you're interested. Let the folks back home see what life in Korea is like

I ought to set off some 2 liter dry ice bombs in the courtyard near school next month right after the test starts. That'd be a hoot. I'd probably get hauled off to jail and make national news, though, so I'd better not! |
