You're good at drawing, but what's up with those weird lines over the u's? I wouldn't bother trying to correlate things to German if they're still working on English phonics.

All of my kids in my advanced class understood that they were just diacritical marks, except one who started writing with them. Ooops, had to straighten him out.

Those "funny marks" over each u are EXACTLY how I learned phonics at the age of 7, 66 years ago.

I instantly see "short u, long u" when I see them.

How old are those kids? I don't see the need to be so critical of their writing if they are below high school age.

i made the kids aware of diacritical marks pretty much a week after they were aware that there were different sounds for vowels. may as well be able to use a dictionary fully, no?

I'd find it a lot funnier if it didn't have a slight ring of truth about it.

The learn not to say, "I like lice".

Um, when he thinks it's part of the proper alphabet, I'm going to correct him.

Marion:

Those so-called funny marks were there for me and Canadians when we were taught phonics in elementary school back in the '70s

Further, you and other experienced teachers must have a lot of wisdom to share with many of us on Dave's. Let's hope that the more seasoned here take the time to share their ideas and insights about teaching E.F.L. with the less-experienced instructors in country.

Respectfully,

Roch
