How much money would it take for you to live back home and would you be able to make enough back there.

I would live ok on a few 1000 US a month and that is in California, but I would not be able to save anything. I would have to stay in a small apartment or rent a room. In 2002 I was making about 22.00 an hour as a staff accountant

I'm going back to the U.S. as a grad student. I honestly have no clue since I've never rented an apartment or had a long term full time job while I was there. I only lived in the U.S. 3 months after graduating from college before coming here....

I'm going back when I have enough money to buy an apartment building with 8-12 units and I'll live off the rent.

Based on experience to have a one bedroom apartment, pay rent, pay utilities, pay all your taxes, save $1000 a month, use the subway twice a day, eat out a couple times a week, see a movie once a week, buy new clothes, take a yearly vacation abroad, and generally not have to count pennies, you need to make about $45K gross a year.

You gotta be kidding!

I was making EXACTLY $45,000 per year as a journalist in 2000 and there was no way I could save a thousand a month after paying taxes, rent, car insurance, repairs and gas, cell phone and eating out a couple times per week. And have extra funds to travel abroad? Not unless I counted pennies and skimp on some basic stuff.

My standard of living and cash flow increased when I took a 2.0 mill per month teaching job in korea.

To accomplish all you mention mindmetoo, I think where I'm coming from you'd need at least $60,000 per year in gross salary.

I imagine that figure is highly dependent on where you were living previously. (It may also represent cost of living circa 2003.)

Yeah me too. I was still really young when I came BACK from Asia and moved back in with my family and am trying to move out now. I am trying to figure out how to make money so I can do all this. I was a really young graduate and never really talked to anyone but my ex-boyfriend Embarassed so now I am figuring out how to do things. So you're not the only one in that boat...let us know how it goes. (Tip: try to get in a program where you can go to school during either JUST during the day or JUST at night-a split shift schedule will make it impossible for you to work not to mention run you ragged-it also helps to make as many friends as possible to show you how to do things.)

I'd need at least $60,000 a year to even think about it. Even then, I find life 'back home' in NA eats up so much more of my paycheck than living here. Taxes alone just seem to suck the life out of working for anybody but yourself.

I recall when I was making $45K a year I did all that. But of course I had to keep total track of my money coming in and going out. Then again, let me state I guess I'm using figures from 1998. And Toronto. So yes prices may well have gone up. Rents, for example.

That's about right as long as you are not paying debt or car payments, that would eat into that 1k savings per month.
