An unprecedented drought stretching across the southeastern United States has forced some of the region's largest cities to declare water emergencies.
In fact the situation has become so serious that in Atlanta, where rainfall totals are more than 16 inches below normal, officials say that they could run out of drinking water in a matter of weeks.
"Without any intervention, we are likely to run out of water in three months," said Carol Couch, the director of the Environmental Protection Division in Georgia.
The drought literally is sucking the city and its water sources dry. |
What exchange lists water futures? |

If they're willing to relocate, there's lots of water in Nunavut, thanks to global warming. We'll take em, but they might have a problem with all the old Inuit elders who are floating around on ice flows, waiting to die. |

Shhhh! That is our greatest shame. You are NOT supposed to talk about that to foreigners. |

America's south is increasingly calling for a pipe line from the Great Lakes. As if it would be that easy. These are international waterways. The position of Michigan et al is a good one: "if you want our water, then move here and enjoy our water". Should Washington state ship some of its mountains to Kansas because the skiing industry in Kansas is hurting? If you have an industry that requires a certain geographic resource, you bring the industry to state's resource. Bring the wealth and talent to Michigan. |

They're doing rain dances in Georgia. Water is on the outs. I hope they find an adequate substitute.

ATLANTA - What to do when the rain won't come? If you're Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, you pray.
The governor will host a prayer service next week to ask for relief from the drought gripping the Southeast.
"The only solution is rain, and the only place we get that is from a higher power," Perdue spokesman Bert Brantley said on Wednesday.

Isn't he confusing a higher power with a cloud? |
