Because my sarcastic cynicism towards the world turns into self-hating rage.

When I used to drink:
1. I smoked.
2. I was fat.
3. hangovers were a killer; being in bed all day with tight chest and a massive hangover isn't fun.
4. I spent too much money.

When I don't drink:
1. I don't smoke.
2 I am thin and in shape.
3. I exercise nearly everyday.
4. I can save money and spend it on things like new toys, savings and possibly a new car.
5. I feel better.

Or is it that your self-hatred is expressed outwardly as your sarcastic cynicism toward the world?

Chicken or egg, my friend.

I don't drink because:

1. I hate hangovers
2. It's too expensive (in NZ)
3. Soju poos
4. I was pregnant

Because I was pretty much an alcoholic...
and runing my relationship. He looked after me one night...you know, cleaning up and such....
next day said he never wanted to do that again. That he wouldn't do it again.

So I quit for him.

Almost 2 years now. And it is hard. Still. But better now...and it helps that he doesn't drink either.

AND saved tons of money, and I feel so much healthier and more sane...depression rarely hits me anymore.

It impairs judgment, confuses the mind, and poisons the liver - and I don't want to find out that some drinking buddy was really a child abuser ...

If it makes you feel bad in the morning then it is probably something you should not have done in the night.

I believe that the title of the thread contains a grammatical error. When negated, the verb "to drink" is normally only transitive. Thus the following are acceptable in many dialects:

1. I don't drink major American lagers.
2. I don't drink bathtub gin.
3. I don't drink anything a stranger hands me.

But "I don't drink", without a direct object, would be simply incomprehensible.

However, there are rare exceptions, such as, "No, dude, I drew a 5, so I don't drink. The person to my right does." Save this for the advanced English classes.
