OK, help a teacher out. I'm hitting a wall on what to do with this lesson. My students are country kids and don't really know any other English than what's in the textbook (and they only sort of know that). So, does anyone have any brilliant ideas for this lesson? I'm having "teacher's block" on what to plan. Thanks so much!

I already ahve this, which is why i'm looking for something else. That lesson would take about 20 minutes. So, does anyone have anything helpful to ad?

That's what I thought too my first year teaching elementary school, but 4 years later, pretty much every lesson is bang on 40 minutes.

Anyways, I do know what you mean. If you had a few extra minutes you could squeeze in some pictures of the family house abroad. Kids love to see/hear stuff about you that you can relate to the lesson!!! Ask them to guess what each room is and what each piece of furniture is in each of the rooms, etc.

Or just slow down and take your time....

Have them draw and label a pic of their house, or since they are country boys, their dream house. Explain to them what front and backyards are. Explain why we call each room what we call them, "living" room, "bath" room, etc.

We used this for an open class today.

We did the make a house activity, from the back of the textbook, p.175-177? (cutting itself took about 7-10 mins so could be a time filler), kids then pasted half the items into there blank house and then quizzed their partners where the other half should go.
We gave them one set of items first, they took 6 each and glued them, then we gave them another set, they took the items they didn't have (but their partners did) and asked their partners, "Where's the blah,blah?".

Sorry, long paragraph and grammar police are homing in, lol.

Read and Draw, or Listen and Draw.

This is group work, and all I do is print off a sheet with some words, phrases, sentences and after reviewing the meaing have the students work together to draw pictures of them.

ALso, an easy thing to use after the kids understand and accept it is active listening. During the look and listen parts have the students tie a phsyical gesture to a certain word, phrase, or type of structure (question/answer), and when they notice it in the A/V source get them to act out the gesture. I do this to help them notice question and answer forms, and for general vocabulary. Also, a follow up for active listening is to play hot seat with the vocab from the active listening activity: the students will use the gestures to communicate the meaning of the word. Hot Seat is where a students sits with their back to the board and the other students must help them figure out the word on the board.
