I am heading to Japan for Xmas, the tentative plan at this point is to ferry over from Busan, get the JR pass, and slowly make my way east towards Tokyo, arriving a couple days before NYE, then celebrate the night of the 31st there and fly back to Seoul the next day, on Jan. 1st.

I am weighing the option of taking the ferry back as well though, (although I'm not sure this would be worth the money I'd save with all the added hassle --I would still have to take a train from Busan back to Seoul), and getting to the ferry would be much easier if I wasn't in Tokyo for New Year's Eve.

Has anybody spent NYE there? Is it totally crazy? And if so, in a good way, or a bad way? Would it be equally fun to spend it in osaka or somewhere else, or is Tokyo just the place to be.

New Year in Japan is all about family and going to the temple (for a lot, not everyone)... so Tokyo is quieter than usual. If you look for metropolis magazine online and do a sesrch you may turn up an article they did on what to do at New year.

The article covered a famous shrine and a boat trip etc. (All in the middle of the night). If you are after info on the nightlife...pretty sure there will be something in the foreigner area.

Enjoy.
