What is acceptable (or reasonable) turnover at a "nice and respected" university within one year? Let's say there are 12 foreign instructors at the university (teaching English). (For the purpose of this poll, the foreign instructors teaching other languages and subjects will be excluded.)

Since I've been at my uni job about two people have left each semester. The reasons they left have been varied, different countries, back home etc. Of course if many people leave, it doesn't necessarily reflect on the university.

Wouldn't this depend on how many professors they have in the first place? If they only had a staff of 12 foreign profs, a turnover of 12 profs would be terrible. On the other hand, if they had a staff of 200 profs, losing 12 in a year wouldn't be anywhere near as big as a deal...

For teachers of conversational English at Univeristies located in Korea, I would have to say that a 33% turn over per year wouldn't be that bad. I have somehow held on to my job for 5 years and signing for a 6th, (and more) and the worst I have seen here was in one semester 3 teachers left and one unwillingly--(But found a better job in the end. Laughing ) And then the other semester was 2 more teaches out for their own reasons. That equals 50% but for the most it has been about 3 teachers a year.

University of California, Berkeley
Berkeley's current level of academic resources will sustain a 5% rate of regular faculty turnover per year for the foreseeable future.

Calgary School District
5% turnover per year

Canadian Rockies Regional Division
8% turnover

Edmonton Public School District
10-15% turnover

I know in hagwan life getting fired can be for purely arbitrary reasons, but in uni life, is it the same? Has anyone ever been fired from a uni just because?
The academic standards at my school aren't very high, and I try to be as personable as I can with my hagwan students (which isn't hard, I actually like chatting with people). I just have four months left on this contract and wonder what my next step should be, as I would like to stay for another year. A note saying how much I love it here attached to some roses and a gift certificate to Shinsegae? Wink

Just selfish.

If a 'good and respected' university lost all of their staff then there would be alot of job openings, and hopefully one for me.

I'm just being selfish about it.

Realistically, figuring if I had a masters degree in linguistics or TESOL.. i'd say it would depend on the size of the staff.. and why they were leaving if it seemed a high number that were going out the door.

With my bachelors however, I'd have to take what I could get and whatever number would be completely acceptable. As long as it was a legit university job teaching legit university classes with vacation time, limited actual teaching hours, and everything else.

Yeah! Let them all leave so I can get in there.

Hey to all you people working in uni's: how many ELT teachers there do not have Masters' degrees?

Matt

Each teacher has at least a master's degree. Some of them have several advanced degrees.
