I'm a fairly serious (but not seriously fast) hiker just moved to Gwangju. I go hiking nearly every weekend in the southern part of the country, with plans to venture further north eventually. I thought about hooking up with the Korean Hiking Club, but they're based in Seoul, which is 4 hours from me, and I really don't feel like paying a bunch of fees just to be able to hike with people, when i can do it for free (plus busfare). I haven't ruled them out entirely, but for right now, I think I can manage on my own.

So, if anyone is interested, post here or write me as [email protected]

hamsanida!

Sorry, can't help you with Gwangju. There's a group Korea on the Rocks which does hikes around the country. They do some rock climbing around Jeollanam-do (Mokpo, Yeosu).

If you have a facebook account, go to the Gwangju group and try posting something there. It's more active than Dave's (for down south, anyway). A lot of foreigners in the area enjoy hiking, so I"m sure you can find some companionship.

There's also some information on http://wiki.galbijim.com/Hiking_in_Jeollanam-do For Gwangju, Mudeungsan is nice, and is among the highest mountains in the area. You've probably done that already, though.

Hey, crash.

I'm coming to Gwangju in a few weeks. Living in the Sierra Nevada, and love hiking, backpacking, kayaking, etc. Besides walking places around town, ya need something to burn off some of the beer. Smile

My original planned employer actually got me all interested about hiking with him, but then I lost the job due to E2 paperwork delays, and got another one.

Hagwon in Sochon-dong.

I'll probably want to do outdoor things a lot when it's possible. I'm really interested in Jirisan (and the wild mountain folk Smile), but having so many local places is great. Sucks that I'm coming in right at the onset of winter, but if past behavior is a guide it'll probably mean I get a better start on the new job.

wolchul-san is better (and closer), altho it may be colder. but i plan on doing as much as i can before cold weather gets here. look me up when you get to gwangju. i dont hike with anyone here. all the teachers at my school are lame-asses Evil or Very Mad and im too much of a lame-ass to find other teachers who hike at other schools in gwangju Confused i hike with some folks from cheonan, and suwon. odyssey, who is on this site, hikes and rock-climbs. jlb and myself have thru-hiked the AT. so we're becoming a pretty good group.

We've got a trip planned for this Saturday to Gyeryongsan National Park. We're meeting at the Cheonan Express Bus Terminal at 10:00, the Daejeon Express Bus Terminal at 11:00ish and the park (Donghaksa) at 12:00. Is anyone interested? So far, there's 3 of us from ESL Cafe and a few other random friends.

I won't make it this time, but I'd be interested in meeting some hikers here and going on the next trip if I get the time. I don't have many opportunities to socialize with other foreigners out in the sticks . . .
