Our accomodation this year is warm and humid, but last years was colder and draughty. The dryness every morning almost killed my throat over the winter nights. A humidifier is on my shopping list if this winter is as dry in our new place.

Gloves and a muffler/scarf (or neck tube) with a decent windproof jacket seem to keep warm enough. A packed morning subway means, you have to remove jacket and things when travelling.

One day last year, it was about 15 below and there was a stiff breeze. It was a really cold day. Not much ice about because of the lack of moisture.

hahaha too funny...it doesn't get cold here at all...last year I didn't turn the heat on once. I'm from Thunder Bay, Canada...I sent all my winter clothes home last year.

I hope my British husband sees this post cause, when we finally go home he's going to freeze his bollocks off hahahaha! Laughing

This needs to be adjusted for those from cold places like Winnipeg in Canada or Siberia in Russia

0C Freezing, put on a sweater, but t-shirts are good on sunny days when you're exercising, too warm for hockey or a toque(cap, hat....pronounced tuke) beer's in the fridge.
-5C Chilly, sweater or t-shirt....try not too sweat too much, this is like playing hockey at the beach, not wearing my toque, got the 'two four' of beer (24 bottles - case - flat) in the trunk so it'll be cold after the game!!!
-10C Starting to feel really chilly, wearing a jacket, fantastic hockey weather, don't forget your toque, or the beer in the trunk...it'll freeze.
-15C still really chilly, still got my jacket and my toque, cold beer after the game
-20C starting to be cold, but I have my sweater, my jacket, my gloves and my toque...I think I'll leave the long under wear at home and I'll have a nice hot chocolate before the cold beer after the game.
-25C cold, I wish it was only -20C, but what can you do...put on two sweaters, go play hockey, still got my toque and the long johns, hands are gonna hurt a little when I go back inside, but the hot cup of chocolate milk will be sooooooo nice, then a cold beer.
-30C Damn, wish I plugged my car in last night, gotta go to hockey, might have to wear an extra sweater, still got the toque and the long johns.
-35C damn that's cold, my tires are square, the car just won't warm up and I still have to go to hockey...my feet will be screaming after the game, gonna add some Bailey's to my hot chocolate, hope I don't get frostbite, I hate frostbite....still got the toque and the long johns, cold beer after the game.
-40C car won't start, damn, gotta go to hockey, call my friends to see if thier car started, wear as much clothing as I can possibly put on and still move, there is no way in Hell that I'm taking my gloves off for one second, remember not to touch anything metal with any part of your body, exposed skin freezes in a short time so we use the buddy system and make sure our friends don't get frost bite, wearing my toque inside, I'll have to have several hot chocolates and Bailey's before I can even move my fingers enough to crack open a cold one.
-45C Geuss I'm not going to work today, stay inside and drink hot chocolate with Bailey's all day, have sex with the girlfriend all day with our toques on, watch hockey on TV and drink beer.

From Gainesville area, eh? Cool town.

I've got a friend coming from Brandon in December. No idea what to tell her what to pack. I guess a big jacket and some thermal undershirts or something?

incognito and others worried about the right clothes

Korea is not very cold, but it is a winter country with ice and snow.

A down jacket is overkill, but I do own a synthetic fill Korean brand jacket...it's cozy and I can wear a light shirt under it. It's easy to take off when I'm in side so I don't sweat me arse off in the movies, 30,000 won.

get a toque (a cap), 2,000 won
a scarf - 3-10,000 won
a wool sweater - 30,000
hoodies rock - 10,000-30,000 won
a shell to cut the wind (I use one of those fleece jackets with the windproof exterior.....not as windproof as a good shell, but good enough for Korea) I even use it on my motorcycle, 50,000 won.
cheap gloves - 2,000 won
shoes.....don't freak out an buy boots, not cold enough for boots, but if you need to, Itaewon has cheap leather boots anytime of year, 50,000 won.

If you plan to ski, ski pants from Itaewon, 10,000-30,000 won

long under wear - optional, but might be good if you work at some cheap hogwon with little or no heat, 10,000 won

wool socks can also be found fairly cheap if you need em (I rarely use them) - but they none too pretty. You won't be finding your flashy 'smart wool' socks round here.

look around for this stuff, you can get cheap stuff in the markets, don't buy the nice gear here.....way over priced. I'm a skier and I only brought my 3-ply Gore Tex shell from Canada, the rest I picked up here. Itaewon and Dongdaemun should be able to sort you out cheap. If not try you local markets..Youngdungpo has a good market.

If you are travelling here and freaked out about winter....don't be. You can find reasonable stuff here to keep you warm and you won't mind passing it on to another round eye when you leave cause it was cheap.

hope this helps

I'm coming from Tampa in a few weeks and that's pretty much what I'm planning on bringing, along with a scarf, hat, and gloves. We're still in the high 80s - low 90s (F) here, so if this continues much longer, it's gonna be a bit of a shock for her when she gets off the plane.

Laughing It doesn't get that cold here. I'm from Orlando and it is still hovering around 90F (sorry we don't use celcius). This is definitely a welcome change from uncomfortable, humid hot for 6 months of the year. Those Florida winters are priceless, though Cool . I think I might go back in December just for that (well, that and I need a break from Korea).
