Nothing says "I make way too much money." than a sword. I always had the dream of owning one. But before I go crazy here. I have couple of questions. If anyone can help me that would be great.
1: A friend of mine told me that I might be able to find a store in Busan that deals with swords. Is there any turth to this?
2: If I do manage to find a store that sells them, is there anyway that I can get this home? Would it be possible to pack it in a suitcase for my flight home?
3: If that's not an option can I send it to my home back in Canada?
Any help wuld be great. And yes I know that it's an odd request. |

Hey Tanklor, I got a black belt in Kumdo in Korea a while back and bought a sword for my training. My sword, which cost $200 and looks pretty nice, isn't sharpened and I brought it back to Canada without even declaring it. I just put it through in the sporting goods/oversized baggage department at the airport.
My buddy bought a $1000 sharp sword, which is sweet, and he got it back to Canada too. He just packaged it up and brought it through customs, but I believe he filled out a form or two at the airport with no major problems.
My advice for buying a sword would be to go to any Kumdo academy in Korea(they are in every city) and talk to the Master there. He can hook you up with a catalog and you can order through there. PM me if you want more details. |

A sword is a weapon and as dangerous as they come. If you haven't the training and discipline you're liable to take a chunk outta your leg or injure someone else.
Besides, to own one you have to register it with your local KNP station (and may have to show a degree in a martial art i.e. Daehan Kumdo, Haedong Kumdo, Hapkido, etc.) and since it is a weapon, YOU cannot legally transport it overseas. There are other legal ways around that, but for your sake I'll keep that to myself. |

If you are looking for a Katana, then I recommend getting a sword that uses folded steel. Don't get the stamped metal pieces of crap out there. Basically, if its less than $100 then its not hand made.
I have a few katanas back home. Katana's are cool and intimidating weapons. They don't have the "I'm gonna crap my pants" factor like a nail bat.
My friend said it nicely once. Someone breaks out a Katana and you think "This guy watches too many movies." Same guy takes out a nail bat and you think "Oh sh**, this guy has done this before!" |

There is a sword and knife museum in Insa-Dong that has a large collection for sale. It is on one of the side streets there. Sorry I can't give more information that that, but it is a pretty cool place. Well worth the 1,000w entrance fee |

Would you buy a gun just for the sake of buying a gun? Hopefully not. I have a 2nd degree black belt in Haidong Gumdo and I own a sword. I had to register it as a weapon at the cop shop... and they needed proof that I knew how to use it. I do. Mine was approximately 1.5 million won and took 2 months to forge, and that is the low end of the scale.
It needs to be polished and kept oiled regularly. Never mind being used... why own a sword if you aren't going to use it? Bamboo beware. It is my most prised possession. It cannot be shipped out of the country except through a licensed swordsmith. Even my kwanjangnim could not send me my sword.
If you want to own a sword then you had better know how to use it before you really, REALLY hurt yourself with it. I have cut myself twice, and both times rather superficially (luckily). The second time, I didn't even notice it until the kids in the dojang started screaming as blood was running down my hand. Yes, they are THAT sharp! We test with real swords and you can seriously ruin your day (month, year, or life) with one used incorrectly.
If you really want a sword then get a good one, and learn how to use it, care for it, and learn when not to use it. It is a tool for killing. There is no other function. If you want a piece of crap that you can hang on the wall and impress your friends then fine, buy any piece of crap and have a good time. Mine is for me, and me alone. I don't show it off, use it casually, or try to impress people with it. In that respect, swords ARE like guns. I agree with a previous poster: swords are REAL weapons, guns are for pusssies. If you fight with a sword you are committing yourself, body and soul, to a fight to the death (or at least serious, bloody injury) . Guns kill at range and that is just lame.

Don't forget there are import issues with weaponry if you ever decide to go back home with it. |
