A while ago I saw some article about daylight savings time coming to Korea and my GF thought bosses would use it to make them work longer. Her reasoning went like this. You knock off at 6 pm but it's really 5 pm. So you're about to head out the door and the boss will be like "hey you work until 6 pm!" "But it is 6 pm." "No it's 5 pm real time so you have to work an extra hour."
I thought she was talking crazy. "But you're missing the point hun. Your work hours are 9-6. You start work at 9 am, even though it's 8 am normal time. So you still work the same amount of hours."
"No, the boss will make us work until 6 pm normal time, no matter what the clock says."
Now I've been here long enough to know that she might not be talking fully crazy. That if there's any place on the planet where a boss could reason this way, it would, hands down, be Korea.
And then the other day there was a small article about DST in Korea and the article ended with this:
My GF isn't the only one with this fear. |

Korean would say "Ok." while thinking F YOU!
Westerner would say "F You, it's 6pm!" while thinking this guy is crazy. |

I'd believe it.
I also believe the reason why they work such long hours is because their bosses are making them catch up for only working 28 days in February! |

So then they could start work at 10am?... it's normal 9am no matter what the clock time says, after all. |

And with that attitude you'll NEVER be a boss in the Hub of Asia =) 9am is 8:30am and 8:30am is NEVER 9:30am. However 6pm could definitely be 5pm or 7pm could be 6pm.
You see how complicated that statement was? I was mixing Korean time with Western dime and still producing the Korean truth. DST will be a disaster for low ranking Korean workers. (English teachers --> You'll be O.K. You're on 50 minutes = 60 minutes or 40 minutes = 50 minutes or 60 minutes = 60 minutes.. too easy!) |
