I was just walking home from the gym in Itaewon when I noticed a very cute street dog lying on the side of the road. He was just beyond the "kimchee pots" on Haebongchon hill. He had his head on his paws, and seemed lethargic (but definately alive). My heart went out to the poor creature, so I stopped. He looked at me, but kept his head down. I gingerly touched his back and he flinched. I suspect someone clipped him and he has internal injuries. He was clearly in shock.

People just passed him by, and I had no luck finding an owner. I feel absolutely guilty walking away; I am an avid animal lover. I honestly didn't know what to do, who to call, or how to move him without getting bit (I have only done cat rescue in the States).

If anyone reads this and has a car, can you help the poor creature...at least get him put down if he is as injured as I expect he is? I hate to see an animal suffer, and I am afraid that when I go to work in the morning, there will be a dead dog on the side of the road.

Also, who can I call if this sort of thing happens again? I hate to stand by and do nothing...

Can you contact the vet in Itaewon? I know someone here has posted their number and said they speak English. Also, that guy Tim from the Lonely Lifetime rescue site may be in Itaewon.

Is it the little brown/black dog with a squarish head?

I always see him (her?) roaming around, getting much too close to cars and sometimes even tying up traffic. Never seen anyone who looks like an owner near the poor thing.

If he's still there-which he probably won't be-take a piece of card board, slide it under him, and find some plastic crate to place him in. Then carry him to the nearest vet.

In all likelihood it's not going to make it if you don't intervene, so if possible, go back tonight.

I've picked dogs up with broken backs before. Better to rescue than have them suffer. No way, however, is anyone going to rescue it via animal control or a so-called 'Humane Society.' Not in Korea.

Nonetheless, if you do this, you're in for the long haul. You'd be rescuing a dog just to let it be destroyed later otherwise. BUT IN NO WAY CALL THE GOVERNMENT ANIMAL CONTROL!! They'll kill it.

Happened to me once too. I was on the highway and a little dog who had just been hit was still lying in the middle. I u-turned, got him off the road and yep...called 119. They listened and I told them it was a dog, but didn't know any numbers for emergency pet services. (this was near Maseok, in the country)

Anyways, the cops came and waited with me and this dog, then some people showed up from the local animal shelter. They assured me the dog would be checked and healed if possible. They were great people and trust that they helped. They weren't government, but just a local group who keep strays and injured dogs.

OP...sorry about that. I know how it feels. Our current dog was a rescued one, as was the greatest little guy, Euni, who recently died.

Meanwhile, there's this human being that wanders around outside of COEX. He looks like he hasn't showered in weeks, and has long hair and worn-out shoes. I give him money when I see him, but nobody stops to help him.

It looked like a scruffy cocker spaniel/mutt, not the cute black dog (who is taken care of by some of the shop owners, I believe).

Hi

Tracy called me and I picked the little dog up from her and took her to the HANS vet clinic in Hannam-dong, Dr Kim there is really good.

He thinks she has some concussion and it's possible she has some internal bleeding, but we're not 100% sure. She may have been hit by a car - certainly she was in shock. She is on a drip, has had a bunch of shots and is now sleeping. She will stay at the clinic for a couple of days for observation & will have some x-rays tomorrow, although he does not think she has any broken bones.

Dr Kim thinks she thinks she is about 6 months old, just a beautiful little shaggy dog. She sat quietly on my lap with her head under her arm while I drove to the vet.

Once she is well enough to leave the clinic I will look after her at my place until we can find her a permanent home (I have two dogs and two cats so she will have plenty of company).

She did not have a collar and was not microchipped, so I will post pics of her here in the next few days as well as an update as to her health and general wellbeing so if anyone is interested in adopting her please contact me at tim.vasudeva AT gmail.com

Thank you Tim! I prayed someone would be able to help...

I just now went back down the hill to check and she was gone. I was a bit panicked...imagining the poor thing had crawled away to die...met with foul play....

I would have gone earlier, but I had a rather nasty exchange on my way home with a neighbor about "sex noises" I was supposedly making (it's our other neighbor, who also fights with his wife)....I got a bit distracted...

I am interested in an update. She was very cute and sweet looking...

I had the displeasure of seeing that kind of thing in eight different cities over there. Although I don't think its a practice unique to the country in the region, it is obviously something that happens a lot.
