I posted a last week about my boss hitting his wife at my school. He didn't hit her, he beat her. This week she returned. There was a lot of tension the whole week. Today it boiled over again. They started to argue and he hit her again.

WHAT CAN I DO? I don't know if I can stay there until the end of my extension period. Please tell me something.

Give him your notice. Tell him you're sorry, but you just can't continue to work in an atmosphere were a man hits his wife.

Then he loses all his end-of-the-contract benefits probably, and any penalities built into the contract. He would be putting himself out due to his boss' bad behavior.

That's terrible, but don't be stupid - if you quit now you'd probably lose severence, air fare, last month's pay, etc. Do you really think anything you say or do will make a difference anyway? Again, I'm not unsympathetic, but I think you had better just shut up, do your time, and maybe do something about it after you get your last pay cheque deposited in your account.

Next time they fight ask 'em if it's a private fight, or if anybody can join in.

I agree with ChopChaeJoe. I strongly believe that if you remain silent about something which strongly offends your principals, you hurt only yourself. Several posters said, in essence, "no, put your financial well being ahead of your strongly held principals," and I just don't buy that.

Maya Angelou said that the most important of all character straits (I'm paraphrasing here, can't remember the exact quote) is courage, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue with consistency.

Do what you need to do to be hang on to your own values.

The truth is that there is nothing you can do. The police won't interfere and they probably won't even listen. The boss' wife needs to do something for herself and if she doesn't then there is nothing you can do to help. If you hit the boss and then expect her to support you ...think again. NEVER NEVER NEVER help a Korean woman in this situation...almost every time they will lie and help the guy who was beating them. You will get in trouble by trying to help. Mind your own business...because trust me...they won't thank you for helping.

that's completely true. when confronted with anyone (especially a foreigner) trying to help them and their husband hitting them, they'll side with their husband. u might be able to deter them from fighting for a while...but only because u'll be the target.
also, for many korean women it's a lose-lose situation. they stay with their abusive husbands or they divorce (which is not usually acceptable for women here).
i would finish my contract and then try to notify the police, if it bothers u that much (and it should!), contact the police after u are out of that situation, not when you're in the midst of it.
