I see a lot of cheap Japanese joints that sell pork cutlets and half-frozen terrible "sushi", but I've yet to see any real sushi bars. Anyone know of any good place to go to find some decent sushi - without dropping 100k won in the process? |

Are you kidding me? There are tons of great, cheap places all over Seoul, in the sushi boat/conveyer belt style. Prices range from 1,000 won to 10,000 per dish at most places.
There's a great place in the Seoul Finance Center at City Hall that I've been to several times, another called Sushi-en in Sinchon (exit 3 Sinchon Station, head towards Yonsei, soft right at the major crosswalk, down a block on your left) and another in Hongdae on the main drag. Lotte Department store in Myeong-dong...
Just keep your eyes open next time you go out...you're bound to see one. |

You'll find most of these sushi establishments right next door to the fine steakhouses and italian resteraunts. |

There are also a lot of Korean-style sasheemi/ cho-bap (nigiri sushi) places that cost a little more but are well worth the investment -- just look for the fish tanks out front (usually with flounder and some other types swimming in them). The menus can be a little hard to figure out but just say "saheemi" -- a single person should be able to eat a decent meal for 12-25,000 + won. The sliced/ raw fish usually comes with some great side dishes and sauces and some kind of soup (mae-un tang, usually).
Another option is the tuna bar style places all over the city -- usually pictures of tuna on the sign. they are japanese style and serve good salads, soups and sliced raw variations of tuna (red, yellowfin, white, fatty etc) very cold with kim (dried seaweed laver -- "nori" in japan) and various other delicious side dishes. These places are usually cheaper than the Korean sasheemi joints because the tuna has been frozen whereas the other is swimming in the tank when you arrive.
Crab, blow fish and eel restaurants are also personal favorites -- most indicated by a picture and/ or tanks of the said creature out front.
If you get the chance, visit Noranjin Seafood Market in Seoul (just outside the subway station). You can get cheap seafood there and the restaurants will cook it for you at a reasonable price.
Bon appetite! |

I think we should start an idiot of the day thread...you'd make a good start.
Behind Ichon station in Yongsan Gu. The majority of longterm Japanese residents in Seoul live in this area. Best sushi and saki that you'll find in the Seoul area. |

For 15,000, you can get a sushi buffet in Hyehwa. Go to exit 1, look on your right next to Bennigan's and Lucky Mart. |

I'm sorry, but when you tell people that the book was better than the movie or that a type of food is better in its country of origin, it's a bit trite. As far as cheapy places go, I've eaten sushi in both countries and didn't notice a big difference. My japanese friend says her favorite place is the one in kangnam, out exit 5 and to the right...i wish i could remember the name. |

sometimes the book is better than the movie...sushi here is well below par compared to Japan...I worked in a sushi bar in my home country for three years during uni so I know my stuff....but if you never read the book and are happy to settle with the low budget mediocre movie...be my guest |

that's the one i'd recommend as well.
don't know the name, but you need to come out of the station and keep walking straight. it's just a little bit past pronto restaurant on the left. there are TVs outside showing the floating sushi boats. go downstairs.
about 15,000 + tax, and 45-ish timed minutes to eat as much as you can. they hate when you scrape the rice off the salmon and hide it under your empty plates, though... |

Eh? I don't know about this one. Sound great though. Are we talking about the same exit? Because if I'm thinking of the right exit, you can't turn left (except to walk into traffic). |
