I love the Foundation series by Asimov. The final book, however, just seemed to drag on and on. In fact, I haven't even finished reading it yet. Am I missing out on anything major? |

Orson Scott Card is a definite favorite.
Stephen King as well.
Ditto the Canticle For Lebowitz nod.
Not sure if they're the best, but The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel (and the sequel Children of God) and The Gate to Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper are both quite good. |

RAY BRADBURY?!
How can this man not have been mentioned? Heaven forfend.
As for a top ten list...
10. Douglas Adams- When I was 13 Douglas Adams was my god.
9. Arthur C. Clarke- Loses points for egging on Dianetics.
8. Isaac Asimov- Sorry, just like Sagan better.
7. Kurt Vonnegut- Best overall writer, but not solely sci fi.
6. Carl Sagan- For writing both science and fiction.
5. Stanislaw Lem- I move me some Klaupaucius.
4. Ray Bradbury- I read these when I was a kid, helped form my politics.
3. Orson Scott Card- Yeah, mormon sci fi.
2. Frank Herbert- Sci fi and poly sci, all wrapped up together.
1. Philip K. Dick- He wins for the Logos trilogy. |

Herbert's Dune is hands down the best of all time in my opinion. It works on sooo many levels.
Peter F. Hamilton is probably the best in the biz right now with his epic space-opera-esque series. I can't wait for the Void trilogy to come out. |

william gibson is so great. i've enjoyed everything he's written, good good stuff. i like that it's so near, his novels, his ideas are very plausible.
robert heinlein is a god. i love his politics (despite my socialist leanings), and his views on sexuality.
spider robinson cracks me up. i'm a pothead, he's a pothead, it's great.
ursula k. leguin is fantastic. she reminds me of heinlein in her writing about sexuality and societal constructs.
stephen baxter makes good stuff, his science is pretty solid, as are his actual writing abilities. evolution is a lot of fun.

On of his generation's most underestimated sci-fi writers, Phillip Wylie. Wrote the book superman was based on, "Gladiator" (the main character is "Hugo Danner"). Wrote "When World's Collide" and a lot of other things for early TV as well. |

Anyone heard of J.G. Ballard. A kind of cross between Science Fiction and beat writing. He actually wrote "Crash" that was made into a movie by David Croninberg. The Movie " The Empire of the Sun" is a true account of his childhood in a Japanese internmant camp in Singapore.
My favorite book by him is "High Rise". Its about a luxery Suburban apartment complex and how trivial rivalry between neightbors eventially escalates to all out war and finally a kind of primal anarchy.
His whole thing was inner space is more interesting than outer space. |

Great thread idea!! Although i will probably just be repeating names.
Philip K D!ck is God as far as SF goes in my opinion. My personal fave is A scanner Darkly although his short stories are imo his best work.
Also I suppose Kurt Vonnegut is a SF writer so he would be up there too, with the Sirens of titan a good one.
I also love Iain M. Bank's culture novels and of course the Dune series, especially Dune Messiah. |

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 October 7, 1849) was an American poet, short story writer, editor, literary critic, and one of the leaders of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the early American practitioners of the short story and a progenitor of detective fiction and crime fiction. He is also credited with contributing to the emergent science fiction genre.[1 |

No Dan Simmons fans? Ilium, Olympos, Hyperion and its sequels are great science fiction. |

Well, I can certainly vouch for the entire Hyperion series. I haven't read the others you mention, though.
I would add:
Blood Music by Greg Bear
Childhood's End / The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke
Starmaker by Olaf Stapledon
1984 by George Orwell
The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton |
