My girlfriend's mom just asked her for a million won last night. That's more than my gf's monthly salary and she's only been out of uni and working for a few months. There's absolultely no way her mother could have expected her to have that cash laying around. Something tells me that I am going to be the recipient of some begging soon.

My gf's sister's fiance makes more money than I do and doesn't pay rent as his family paid a huge key money deposit for them, so, why does this request for cash come to... well, my household and not his?

Parents do that here. Korean parents are the most manipulative people I think I've ever had the pleasure to second-hand deal with.

I would NOT pay it if I were you. You're not married, right?

Don't do it just say you don't have the cash, you send it all home and live on a super tight budget. My MIL has tried this on me a million times. She just asked for 5 million won to fix her teeth.

It's the law. There is an actual law in Korea that children are responsible to pay for their parents. Its a way around having a proper pension program (the pension program is a new development since the 97 crisis).

Welcome to Korea!

I have been married to two korean women. My first wife gave her mother 30,000,000 won, and my second gave her mother over 50,000,000 won. Neither told me what they were doing until the deed was done. Make a firm stand now, before you marry your gf, or you will regret it later.

Could try offering something. A token amount.

That's better than a "no."

Dude, is this the same chick with the case of cooter stink and the bruises that you posted about a while back? If so, why haven't you learned your lesson yet?

Aren't parents allowed to move in with eldest children, regardless of whether they are married or not.

Or, newly married women can't make decisions for the first few years of marriage because the mother in law makes them.

Confucianism, gotta love it!

I'm pretty sure chaz47 is just a troll, folks. Today he's posted a thread about jacking off a dog and now one about his gf's mom trying to hit him up for money. Put two and two together... he just posted two standard Korea-bashing threads in an effort to rile people up.

Please folks, don't feed the trolls.

Jacking off a dog is a standard thread? I've never seen it before...

Note to self: Don't fall in love with a Thai.

Are they as bad as Korean parents to both sexes? Just curious...
