so, i've now come to believe that many of my kids are a little unbalanced. to date at my school, i've had a girl that likes to take out her exacto knife and shred her english book into tiny, *tiny* pieces, i've got another student who likes to take a red marker and colour sticks of gum. quite a few students enjoy taking a knife and making holes in their wooden desks (i'm not talking small holes either, i can see the titles of their books in there). i also have a male student who tries to hold my arm/hand and won't let go (this is MS, not kinder).

anyone else have similar (or worse) stories? just to make me feel better?

oh, and another kid that apparently was trying to make a weapon using a belt and a knife, and put the knife through his own hand. other students delight in telling me "hole!" and pointing at him

funny you mentioned it....today I was teaching the 6th graders...

one boy was ripping small pieces of paper from his book...and eating it. A boy who sat next to give gave him a good whack and said something really loud in Korean. I told him dont hit other studnets...and the other students motioned to me that the boy was eating paper

Another boy was using his paper cutter to shave the hair off of his fingers. Ya know..the litlte knuckle hairs...I was like wtf..do that at home.

Don't allow them to have such things on their person. I got really sick of my HS students strolling in with MP3 players and cellphones and then playing with them in my class. Now I stand by the door with a bucket at the start of class, and anyone who has one can either put it in the bucket or keep it on them. If I catch sight of one during class, it becomes MINE for a very long time. Students who put them in the bucket get them back at the end of class.

This might not help much for the paper-eaters and punchers, but couldn't you do something similar with knives, paper cutters, markers, gum etc? For most classes, students only need a book and a writing instrument. Anything else is generally not required and only serves as a distraction.

I worked at a hagwon once and one day a whole class of 9 year old came to school with a medical syringe full of water, they were using them for water fights.

I was a little irate, I collected the syringes and informed the director. The director asked one student "Where did you get the syringes?"

The girl replied "We bought them from the pharmacy."

Needless to say the rest of the day was a 'K-Day'.

I kid started to eat his book, I made him eat the whole thing. Never did see him again.
