Just an aside not.. one of the biggest reasons I've avoided Japan is because I hate spending alot of money just to enjoy an evening out. However I went to HongDae for awhile on Monday night to avoid the many entrance charges.. and almost everywhere sells beer at a minimum of 5000-6000 won??!!?? Whats up with that? Route 66 always had prices like that and was well-known for being the MOST expensive.. now everything is that price.. I went to HonkyTonk, Ska, all the little old dives from even a couple years ago.. and they are all way up there in the beer prices.. sheesh, one of the better reasons to be in Korea is becoming not so good anymore..

Whats up with that?

TRUE. Actually most things are still cheap.. transportation, etc.

I guess I'm just disappointed with going out bar-hopping as those costs significantly seem to be going up..

Actually, proper-perspective wise.. things are still overall quite affordable and cheap.. and true, galbi and soju in still the same (although unfortunately I avoid soju.. so I don't seem to take advantaget of that)..

And thank god or I would be flat broke after every weekend in this country.

yeah, bar prices are too much in most places.

Places like Yellow, Gold bar and Luxe keep the cost down a bit as beers and tequilas are less than 2000.

Get juiced on Soju in a restaurant, have a couple of tequilas in one of the above then go to the more expensive places.

If I keep my saturday night expenditure under 100,000 I'm pretty happy.

Didn't you hear? They caught about 10-20 people (not including the Americans on-the-take) smuggling booze off the Yongsan base. The Namdaemun black market has been crushed. We'll have to pay actual prices for awhile.

Somewhat related note: Have you been to a local monetary exchange lately? The banks are giving a better rate than some of the illegal exchangers! Scary! Sumin ain't right.

5000-6000 is what I have been paying for a bottle of imported beer for about the last 5 years. I am surprised that the price hasn't gone up. If anything I have noticed some bars lowering the price of some of their bottles. For instance, Heineken used to be about 6000 everyplace, even have seen it at 7000, but now I have seen it a few places for 5000, but still usually 6000. Same with a Bud. Once always 5000, can find it for 4,500 at some places.

Wow, now I feel like heading out tonight. Twisted Evil

Yes it is.

But the owners and employees suffer from an extreme case of 'foreigner fatigue'. I use to go there a few years ago but these days I feel extremely unwelcome everytime I go up or down either stairs (depending).. and alot of other foreigners comment on the exact same thing.

Hmm...location, location, location (or should I say, "establishment, establishment, establishment").

Personally, I live in two extremes when it comes to partying. On one hand I have my biz-related outings which can go anywhere from 1 mil. - 3 mil. for 2-3 ppl, on the other I have my private pissups with Korean as well as non-Korean friends.

I've found that on those private outings, I've had the most fun at "Korean-Korean" places like hofs, chicken hofs, ssamgyupssal restaurants etc etc. where I usually end up pissed off my gourd with a full belly for less than 20-30K/person. The secret - draft beer/soju. Good times, as long as my non-Korean friends are the kind that "get it."

I realize it's a different atmosphere than the club scene (old 30-year-old fart that I am), but many of my whitey (many of whom are former clubber animals) pals are convinced converts by now Laughing

*Note - of the categories of places I mentioned, I'm not talking about being surrounded by ajussis either - I mean establishments with a somewhat youthful patronage.

As for premium beers, I'm wondering if you guys have the same condition: I can drink 4-5 Heinekens or (insert your fave) but will not care nor taste what the next 10+ are. Yourself?

I would agree with you. My alltime favorites are just sitting around a galbi table or anywhere in any street. I definetely agree with you there. Actually thats why I'm such a bigtime Sinchon fan. They have alot of galbi places everywhere, very Korean.. but at the same time all with the background of drunk young Koreans.

If I'm with good friends.. I could be drinking anywhere.. doesn't matter.. and the last place I want to go is to an expensive club with high cover charges, expensive beer, and music where I can't hear anyone.. (kind of defeats the purpose of going out with a bunch of good friends). I put it in the same category as getting a date with some girl you are really interested in and bringing her to the movies (where you sit in silence for two hours of wasted 'together' time).

But of course if you're 'hunting'.. hunting for girls.. then you gotta pay the cost to be in the places that they tend to congregate. So depends I guess. Generally though if you are with good friends, then it doesn't matter where you are.

Well first some caveats. I usually don't really enjoy anju when drinking, except for having fruit and vegetables; and drinks with dinner, I have never enjoyed for some reason. That said, I usually stay with a more up market beer through out night. Will, mix it up with different brands. Why? Korean beer plain leaves me feeling worse if I drink it. I want to be productive the next day, and have learnt through lots of trials that it is best to plain stay with a better brewed beer. And not really having any anju, makes it worth while to have a better beer. I do drink the Korean beers, Hite being good, but it is never more than one. I can have about 10 or 12 beers if really out for the night, but don't usually have so much. It is expensive, but I enjoy the beer.
